Title: MN3005 sighting. Good value OR SCAM??
Post by: Govmnt_Lacky on February 07, 2012, 03:12:51 PM
Came across this today....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IC-PANASONI-DIP-8-MN3005-/250814851196?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a65bae87c

Has anyone had any experience with polida2008?

Are these just re-labeled 3008s?

If they are true-to-form 3005s, then this is a great deal.  ;)

I was a bit suspect after reading some of the negative feedbacks. Almost all of them listed their complaints as either DID NOT RECEIVE or FAKES  :-\

Just wanted to know if anyone here had a good experience with the seller.

A small sign of good news  ;)

Ya' know... with all of these MN series chips available, either NOS or knock offs, it makes me wonder why no one can re-issue some of the SAD BBD chips  ???

UPDATE:

After some sniffing around, I decided to contact polida2008 with this message:

Are these MN3005 chips 4096-stage delay BBD chips?

Are these the same as MN3008 with just a different number stamp?

Here is the reply I received:

Dear,
Sorry I cannot answer it.
Pls see the description in my list.
If you are interested in them, pls purchase in EBAY directly.

I really don't know how to read into this. I asked 2 straight forward questions about their authenticity and with this reply it sounds like he either 1) Does not know anything about the parts he is selling -or - 2) He does not want to admit anything in case of a dispute.

^^^That does sound suspicious to me! One thing I would ask for is photos of the exact chips I was purchasing since he may be posting stock photos. But with the answers he provided to your questions it does not sound like he is willing to do that for you.

UPDATE 2:

My message to polida2008:

I want to know if the MN3005 are authentic.

You say that you test them before delivery but, that means nothing if they are being tested as MN3008 or MN3208.

Response from polida 2008:

I am angry about your words.Pls contact other sellers.

I think it is safe to say that I will NOT be doing business with polida2008  >:(

The only way to know is to buy them.  I've bought about 15 MN3005 from eBay in the past and only 2 of them have been fakes.  It's a no-brainer for PayPal to refund your money for counterfeit goods so I'm willing to take the risk.  We're only talking about $12.50 here.

$25 if you bought two  :P

Recently being the victim of Paypal's nonsense policies (i.e. the buyer's remorse on the MXR flanger I sold) I would rather do my investigating up front and from what I have received from the seller, I am not convinced it would turn out good.

I do however, hope that it turns out well for you jbgron  ;D

Please post back with your experiences so others can take advantage if it turns out to be LEGIT!!  ;)

For what it's worth, I had good luck with funkward-tech on eBay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/150719453864?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/150719453864?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649)

I bought 2 MN3005, 2 MN3008, and 3 MN3007.  All checked out good.  The 3005's weren't cheep, but they worked.

I think you asked polida2008 the wrong questions and they interpreted it as impuning their honesty, responding as any of us might in the same circumstance.

Perhaps WE are aware of various relabellings that have happened here and there, but that doesn't mean everyone in the world is.  Most counterfeit money or goods are passed on by someone who does not know it is counterfeit.  The brevity of the note (and possibly polida2008's limited skill in English, I don't know) suggests they might be knowingly passing on counterfeit goods.  Understandably, they take offense.

It is not unreasonable to write back to this individual, apologizing for your initial tone, and indicating that you had heard from friends of many cases where these rare chips had been relabelled, and you just wanted some assurances.  Since polida2008 will have gotten them from somewhere else, you are interested in knowing how confident they are about their source.  It is not unreasonable to ask if, should the chips turn out to be different than what the seller thought they were, there was any sort of return policy.

Now to find a nice circuit that plays well with the V3205.  Any suggestions?

I built this with v3205's, sounds brilliant and I use it all the time.

However, I wouldn't buy v3205's instead of 3005's.

Madbean DirtBag Deluxe. You can use MN/V3205 or MN3005 in this DMM inspired analog delay.

Yes, that's a nice project.   I built one with MN3005's and it sounds great, but it needs some tuning.  The delayed signal is really hot and is causing a couple of minor issues.

From what I read, there were distortion issues with the V3205 chips.   Bean published a solution, but he didn't sound perfectly pleased with it.   I have some chips that I will try just the same.

The AD3208 looks interesting too.  It's almost exactly a WHAP.   I have it in Eagle now for an update but have been struggling with the layout.
Title: Re: MN3005 sighting. Good value OR SCAM??
Post by: Mark Hammer on February 21, 2012, 11:25:54 AM
Note that the AD3208 was essentially a project in that period when Beiling had started producing 3208 chips, all the Matsushita MN3005 chips were pretty much used up, but Coolaudio hadn't yet started producing MN3205 clones.

The MN3205 and its Coolaudio clone are pin-for-pin compatible and CAN function perfectly in place of a 3208 to yield longer delay times.  So consider sticking a pair of them in an AD3208 for more delay time.

I built the AD3208 before, its a nice project.

The V3205 is also a great chip. A lot of people complain about distortion/ clipping, but thats common with ANY BBD. The circuit surrounding the BBD is critical and it can be tuned with great results.

Proof:

http://soundcloud.com/youngpedals/time-stomp-proto

(This circuit uses 3xV3205's. The reproductions seem to have slightly more white noise (than MN30XX/MN32XX) to my ears, but the delayed notes are just as good.)

What does a Chinaman do when he has an erection?
He votes!

Couldn't resist.  In all seriousness though, some sellers on eBay abuse the 45 day PayPal claim rule.  They will string you along for 45 days saying your item has been posted etc then go completely silent once the 45 days has expired.  Remember to file a claim before 45 days has expired.  Still no joy with my ICs, hopefully not too much longer.

Maybe Jimi or one of the other prior purchasers can chime in and say if their shipment took a long time.

It does state in black and white in his listing that shipping to the USA and Australia is 10-20 days.

Paid for mine on 2/14 and the estimated delivery is 3/1 to 3/14.   Should be under 30 days so enough time to file a claim if need be.

Well, mine came in today.  15 days shipping, so right on time.

I tested them in a Madbean Aquaboy and one chip is good.  The repeats sound good in the 300 - 350ms range.  The repeats will go to 450ms with the clock trimmer cranked, but the repeats are unusable.  I just test it that way to make sure it isn't an MN3008.

The other chip is nonfunctional.  No delay at all, so I can't say it's a fake.  I emailed the seller and will have to see what they say.  I hope I don't have to ship back the bad one.  I don't like international shipping.

FWIW, I bought 3 MN3005 and 4 MN3008 from funkward-tech, also on eBay.  His prices are just a little [painfully] higher, but all of the chips checked out perfectly.

That's still not a horrible price.  There is another guy selling them for $35, and getting buyers.  I bought 4 from Polida, 1 was bad and he agreed to replace it.  I'll know for sure this week if he replaced it with a good one.

Then there is bascoomart selling them $12.89 shipped.  The 2 buyers that left feedback said they were good.  I've heard good things about eBay buyer protection, but have never had to use it.  Assuming it works as advertised, the main risk is time and aggravation.

Dear,
I feel so sorry and can't give you the any brand, but this item not the original one.
Best regards,

I ordered an MN3005 from him but he wrote back I should pay another 3.50 for him to register the package at the post office, otherwise he would cancel the transaction. Sounds very fishy to me, as he put "free shipping" into the description and doesn't give me a choice. Did he do the same to you and did you pay?

If they are real, I would gladly pay 3.50 more, but everything about this guy seems fishy.

I got mn3005 from ebay and cleaned mark with tooth brush and acetone (it was not laser labeling).
But chip was tested as mn3005 (I compared mn3007, mn3008, mn3005, mn3006 and mn3009 in small clone chorus, and did pcb convertor for 3007 to 3005/3008).
So, I don't know what to think... Next step is to put it in DMM, but I'm too lazy to disassemble DMM for one chip.
