Originally, this was supposed to be a layout for an Axis Fuzz.  I built it, but did not get anywhere near the sound of what the pedal should sound like.  Here's the original schematic:

After fiddling around and getting nowhere, I accidentally touched a part of the board and lug 1 of the fuzz control.  This is when the fuzz came alive.  I did some testing and found that by switching a few things around, I could get it to work.  Here's my modded version:

I changed Drive 2 to Drive 3 and added a wire going from the first jumper to Drive 2.  Now, it sounds a bit like a Muff.  Either I did something right OR, this pedal is soon to burn out.  If anyone can spot the errors on both layouts, please let me know.

*DRIVE 3 IN THE SECOND LAYOUT SHOULD BE DRIVE 1.  DRIVE 3 IN THE DIRECTIONS BELOW THE LAYOUT ACTUALLY DOES GO TO GROUND.  MY MISTAKE.

If you post schematics of the circuits you may get a better response. Those things are a pain to read.

The original layout looks correct (assuming the schematic is correct). Your mod is essentially equivalent to turning the drive knob all the way down. I suspect either a bad drive pot or a mistake in your build.

Is the schematic correct ? Looks to me as if that 3906 should either be a 3904 , OR it's upside-down .

Edit:  Now I look more closely , it IS right - just looked odd compared to FF-type circuits .

I think it's correct, but just drawn counter-intuitively. It seems to match the other schematics out there, as well as the front end of the Roger Mayer octavia (with some very minor changes). At least close enough to work, I would think.

It's an absolute fault in my build (that's why I dislike veroboard layouts - the possibility of bad connections seems more likely).  I think I'll just convert the schem to a pcb and etch it.  Plus, veroboard looks kinda sketchy in a finished pedal, IMO.

so far, I've tested the pots - nothing bad there, although I'm starting from scratch.  I realize I'm a noob at this.  I'm really hopeful that I'll be able to learn something from everyone.  The idea of being able to build an effects pedal, even if it starts out as building off of someone else's schematic, is awesome.  I wish I did this stuff when I was teching for bands.
