A VERY informative thread. Thank you for the explanations and design details, everyone.

I seem to remember PRR explaining SMPS with a bungee cord a while back, it was an analogy that worked similarly but I like the cart with the rocks being flung at it even better!

Chapter Nine, "Voltage Regulation and Power Conversion" in the new Art Of Electronics is available as a free sample and although I haven't read it yet I would bet that it has some useful information too.

Here is the link to a password-request form for downloading the chapter:

Let the nice people at Cambridge University Press have your email address, they won't abuse it, and if it will encourage them to keep publishing excellent books like Art Of Electronics, isn't it worth it?

yeah, yeah, old topic, blah etc.

transmog, if you are still watching - I have this on the BB again, just for testing. with 9V in, 47uH, 100k load, and expecting ~120V, it won't start right good. clik - clik - clik on the load switch until it kicks.

I'm using a small smd control board, so all I can change is R2, 3 and 4. any ideas? and, is it possible to mod the regulating string to make it pot variable, or is that cross porpuse with the zeners?

QuoteNow suppose you have a really large cart you want to move, and for some strange reason you want to make it stay a certain distance up an incline by showering it with a steady stream of flying rocks.

This is fantastic.

and I have an answer. the HV kicks in with an R4 of between 15k and 18k, but only if R2 is a pair of 0R5's. any other value of resistance at R2 would not start.

tested with 33k load and 180V output tonight. still starts and runs fine (167kHz). it starts to show spikes on the filtered DC (5k6 and 10uF), but they are only 100mV peak, whereas the nixie shows 200mV p-p spikes at all currents. why is that, and how is it fixed?

if it had handles, we could call it the mercer box.
