I just built a compressor using the SSM2166 IC, and I think this IC is a way to get the sustain that people are looking for.   What I built is very similar to the AMZ Q&D comp2, however, the pot controls are different and I added a variable input gain stage to change the compressor into a distortion device... as I was tweaking with it I had a couple settings that made it distort, and I must say that it is not too bad.  It has an interesting distortion sound.

Either way, I like it a whole lot better than what's in my Digitech RP20 DSP board, even though it does not have adjustable attack and release.  I think some time I'll go about the task of making a compressor with variable attack and release.

Well, I thought if what I built is as satisfactory to me as it is, the AMZ Q&D comp2 is likely very pleasant, so I would recommend building one of those compressors using the SSM2166.

Again, this IC is available from Allied Electronics, and maybe from analog devices, www.analog.com

Is the Q&D 2 serves as a noise gate and a compressor in one? Something that can give me the sustain I want without the noise of high-gain pedals?

Thanks.

Oh yeah!

compressor/limiter/gate, even.
I like the sound of the QD2, really full. It does take a little getting used to because the controls are rather interactive, but the learning curve is small.
It's on my bass-board right now and practically always on on a mild compression setting.
