bardwells and rsh do 100 x 1n4148 diodes for a quid, and other bargain packs...
for enclosures,i'm not sure, but i'm planning on getting them from banzai as they seem to have the best prices

One day they'll be a sticky for 'EU suppliers links'!  :icon_razz:

Many others.  Use the search, or just google the parts you're looking for along with something like 'mail order'/'orders'.  You find some interesting little places that way.

Back pages of EPE magazine have listings too.

I'd have to agree that I dont think you can do much better than those suggestion in the UK.  I use all of them and they give a great service and next day delvery.  Banzai rock to and carry some hard to find bits.

i really want to buy a big pack of metal film assorted values. does it really make a difference if i use metal film instead of carbon film?

I use metal film ...Carbon film ones are good for adding 'mojo' to things like distortions etc...i think the GEO site has loads of info on carbon resistors

You can frequently get bulk packs of basic components on eBay.  1N4148 or 1N4001 diodes, metal film or carbon film resistors and sometimes film caps as well.  Bulk lots of semicoductors come up sometimes too.
