HOTGUIT

hi everybody
I have built a red llama using MarkM layout
Layout like tis one (http://gaussmarkov.net/index.php?page=layouts)
but i have a problem:
There is no gain, only clean sound and with the pots (both) completely open
under the 70% there's no sound at all!!
Who can help me?
suggestions welcome
P.S.
the pcb has been populated correctly
bye

markm

I'm a bit confused.
That isn't MarkM's site?
Did you use gm's layout by any chance?

bluesdevil

On Markm's pcb layout it looks like a mistake where the positive leg connects to R3. What you should do is connect C5's positive leg to the other side of R3. You can compare it to Gaussmarkov's layout to see what the hell I'm talking about.
I'm pretty sure that is where the problem is, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I can't correct you.....you corrected ME!
ooops!  :icon_redface:

I have been re-vamping many of the older layouts in my gallery and had the Red Llama on the drawing board so, I finished it to clean up the error.
Sorry for the confusion and inconvenience,
Hey, not every hit is a home-run right??  :D

Have a look; http://aronnelson.com/gallery/album76/Red_Llama_LAYOUT_001

Hey Markm, believe me when I say I'm a fan, not a critic!!! Glad I could help some.

This is one of those builds that you can do really really small on perf. Almost not worth it to make a PCB imo ianal bbq tyvm kthxbye (etc)

sketchy (top view):

My favourite home made, by the way.

HOTGUIT

thank you bluesdevil.
MarkM sent gussmark...'s layout because is similar to yours. (I hadn't yours in my PC, now I have)
I'll make the mod (unfortunately the pcb is completely populated) and I 'll report.
thank you both of you
Bye

Hey Markm, the new layout looks good to me!!
Hey HOTGUIT: Yeah, you should be able to work it out with the populated board. Maybe cut the trace where the positive cap leg connects to the resistor, drill a few holes in the appropriate places and jumper a wire connection to the other side.

It's actually kind of "wild" looking isn't it?!
Laying the IC over on it's side is Way Easier (!) but, it pretty much confuses me sometimes.
So now, it looks Way different than most of the others and it is a bit bigger but, not Way Huge!!  :icon_wink:

HOTGUIT

Hi blues,
Yes, you are right, I wired the cap and the res. pins and I broke the trace.
Good result, the pedal sounds a lot; I like it
Hi MarkM, your new pcb is cool!
Just a question, i noticed that using the Red LLama with the volume pot completely open the sound degenerates (a bad sound comes out the amp - JCM 800 50 W. head -)
Do you know why? Is it typical of this project or there's something wrong in mine?
Thank you

markm

You'll have to excuse my ignorance about Marshall stuff but, is that a Solid-State head?
Remember, the Llama wide-open is VERY powerful to say the least.

HOTGUIT

No, it is a tubes head.
It has a pre stage with diodes clipping but it is a tubes head.
Yes, Red LLama has an high output, but it is a medium drive OD isn't it?
I mean, it is a medium gain OD because mine has not a so high gain; is it true?
thank you.

markm

I've always considered this one as an Overdrive bordering Distortion.

HOTGUIT

Hi Mark
mmmmhh, then why mine is more like a low-mid gain OD? ???
I followed the scheme and I used right components. (I only omitted the 1M res marked * on the schem.)
What can it be?
Maybe the iC? it's a HCF4049 ube and not a CD4049 ube
Any suggestion?

remmelt

Mine has a fuzzy feel over it, definitely more distortion than overdrive. On low settings there's a compressed crunch available, and it cleans up very well with the guitar's volume pot. Great to set to a lead tone, then lower the guitar three notches for rhythm.

It sure does go up to smooth distortion though!

Could be the IC.
I'm not familiar enough with your sub to say so one way or the other.

oldrocker

Just a thought, maybe since the 4049 UBE is unbuffered that might have something to do with it.  Try a different 4049 IC.

remmelt

I'm not sure, but I think it's supposed to be unbuffered.
