Dear All,

I am planning to build the Brian May Treble Booster per the schematic at geofex

I notice that Mouser Electronics stock a BC182L transistor. Has anybody used the Mouser sourced BC182L for this effect, and how did you find it? Is it the same transistor that the original used, or is there a better substitute? Thanks.

It doesn't matter much which transistor you use; I plugged several into mine and it made no discernible difference if you use any med to high hfe transistor.  A 5088/5089 works like a charm.

1. It's the original transistor according to that schem. (So by definition, won't any substitute not be better????  ;D Just being cheeky...)
2. Try this for size.
3. Beware. My BC182Ls are BCE pinouts.

I've used BC182 with and without L, BC184, BC109 and who knows what.

You'll find varying degrees of mojo, dirt and noise with differen't zisters. They'll all work. You might want to add a trim pot over the emitter resistor's bypass cap to be able to adjust gain. This is not a completely clean booster.

Khas Evets

I've experimented with various transistors and think they do matter. It's been a while since I played with this, but try transistors with different gains. I tried a lower gain 2N2222 and a higher gain BC183L and 2N5088/9. I have an unfinished build that would allow switching between three.
