I was experimenting with Arsenio Novo's parallel NPN-PNP pair distortion idea and I realized that the PNP was doing almost the same job as the Bazz Fuss diode.

In the BF the diode does two jobs: it feeds the transistor base and it clips the signal. A quick DC math shows that collector resistor depends a lot on hfe, so a trimmer should be used for fine tuning. I did not find a useful criteria for fine tuning, it must be done by ear.
By putting an extra resistor from Vcc to base the tuning point is easy to find since it sounds horrible except near the sweet spot. You need to set the collector voltage equal to the base voltage. That leads to ib*Rb = hfe*ib*Rc, or Rb = hfe*Rc.

Once my parts come in I am building a bazz fuss, so I may have to try this version on the breadboard before finalizing anything.

Please PM if you breadboard it.
