Anybody seen these?

1550 Series -> http://www.hammondmfg.com/1550ptbl.htm
The 1550B and 1550M are roughly analagous to the 1590B and 1590BB but a bit cheaper (~2.00USD cheaper at Allied).

1590 "Stomp Box" series -> http://www.hammondmfg.com/dwg_SBVer.htm
Pre-painted for your convenience.

That 1550M looks sweet.  It measures 120x100mm, compared to 119x94mm for the 1590BB, and is juuuuuuuust a little bit deeper.

That's just what I was thinking.
Wonder what makes them less expensive?

A colleague just ordered in a bunch of Chinese 125C clones, and I have to say the walls are pretty dang thin.  Not prohibitively so, but discernibly.  The finish was also a little shoddier than I'm used to from Hammond with the edges nearest the bottom plate in need of a lot more sanding and smoothing than I'm used.  So, there is plenty of room in the world of cast aluminum chassis for "you get what you pay for".

I just checked the specs and indeed, they shaved a little off the walls.
The 1550's are 1.8mm (.071 in) thick vs. the 1590 at 2.25mm (.089 in).

The consolation?
At least these are genuine Hammond, so I would hope the quality to be a bit better than your friend's Chinese boxes.
I also imagine the thinner walls may be a little easier to drill through, hm?

As for the "painted" enclosures, this is not really new.  I remember some years ago you could order the boxes from AES prepainted (actually powder coated) for an upcharge.  I guess they must have discontinued them for some time but brought them back now as "new".  It's cool any way you look at it.

only €13.69 ($18.46) for a 1550B from my usual supplier (farnell)  :o

a few extra mm height over a 1590B would be great, hope they start stocking them locally.

Hammond now has pre-painted 1590BB's in blue, green, gray, orange and red.

Check this out:

The other difference with the 1550 series (from the 1590 series) is metric screws.  Europeans will probably prefer the M3 screws to the 6-32 screws in the 1590.

Size comparison (approximate/rounded) reference:

1590B - 4.4" x 2.4" x 1.2" (including lid)

1550B - 4.5" x 2.5" x 1.2" (including lid)

Both have same inner height too.

Ooh, metric...
I didn't notice that part, thanks for spotting it.

As far as availability here in the states I'm seeing: Allied only offers the 1550B, Digi-Key has both B and M in stock, Electro-sonic doesn't carry either, Mouser only stocks the B, and Newark.com only stocks the B as well.

Digi-Key and Allied both stock the pre-painted 1590's, Mouser only offers plain, grey and black.

Looks like I'll be shopping at Digi-Key next paycheck...

You can get powder coat painted 1590 from Newark in gray and black too. I bought a black 1590bbk and bare metal 1590b from them.

I just checked at AES (tubesandmore.com) and they have the painted 1590BB boxes, and they are on sale for $8.06 (regular $8.95).  Couldn't find the new 1550 boxes there.
