This is one that's been sitting in a bag for about 8 months, and I finally got around to getting it done. I have a layout I'll fix and upload in the morning.

I used 2n5088's to calm down the hiss to a tolerable level, then added it back it, I think, with all ceramic caps. It definitely has a sharper sound with caps... more of a plastic sound than with poly's.

The V+ can be 9V or even lower. I didn't measure voltages, but got a hint to check it out when I powered down the effect from my PS. It did the typical clean-up as the supply drained out, but held there way longer than any other circuit. At (somewhere around) 3V, this thing cleans up nicely. I'm going to run it off of a pair of AA's, and use momentary switching, myself. At 9V, it sounds like you have a pocket radio cranked so grandma gets annoyed across the room. Lower voltages are more akin to having it at a tolerable level sitting on your desk, but still loud enough to play some 560AM ZROCK (Gawd I miss that station!)

This is basically what I tuned a Lofo Mofo to be. I added in a bit more filtering and now this sounds more to me like the old black pocket radios I'd have as a kid. (Like These)

Ahh... the old FlavoRadio... when you lick it, it tastes...

like...

Nothing. (seriously, I suck at naming stuff, lol... that's why our band is "Three White Guys and a Black Skater"... they were just too lazy to come up with something better!)

So, I labeled the diode wrong (number). This new schem is good to go. I have a PCB burned, populated, and tested out... no way to get soundclips right now.

This is designed to mount a pot over the top of the components. If your caps are small enough, the transistor is your only limit to height.

Enjoy!
