What to put in this fuzzbox? and where did I get the enclosure ....

This is an old alu box I resprayed red and relabeled fuzz attack (was allready there in marker).

But it's empty now ...
What shall I put in? The third knob could be a LED as well.
I could easily put in a 3 knob tonebender, since I got a 90% soldered PCB.

Second: anyone remember where these boxes were found? I tink it was a frenchman.
He sold this under the name "japanese boxes". He bended a custom sloped pedal for me too. But his coordinates are lost.

Nice box.

An Orpheum or Fuzz-Rite with the variable body mod I stumbled onto, or a Shin-Ei FY-2 with variable midscoop (or variable body), will make you very happy.

I promise.  You'll like it.

The variable body mod?  OK, see the 100k/47k pair with the .1uf cap at their junction?  The location of that cap long the total 147k path determines how much bottom is in the resulting fuzz.  Replace the 100k and 47k with a 27k and 22k fixed resistor, and a 100k pot.  The 27k goes to V+, then to one outside lug of the pot, and the other outside lug goes to the 22k, then to collector of Q2.  The cap goes from the wiper to V+.  So, you have the same total resistance, but the resistance between V+ and the cap is varied as you move the wiper around.  It will make the sound go from more nasal to more beefy and stocky.

Variable scoop consists of placing a 2k-5k variable resistance between the .1uf cap to ground near the output, and ground.  It will let you bring the mids back for a bigger more vocal growl.

Either mod is useful.

You could go for something obvious like a Big Muff, but you could also make a Fuzz Face and mod it with some kind of tone or warp control like Mark recommended.  My Mondo Fuzz is a high gain FF with a tone control.

What fuzzes do you have already?

I'll go ahead and recommend my favs - FZ-1, Scrambler, Orpheum, Axis Face, and Axis Fuzz.

All two knob pedals, though.

Is this a correct schematic for the Scrambler you are referring to?

looks interesting...
always think outside the box

tcobretti

Yep.  I used the schem from JD Sleep's site (http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/projects/22-octave/129-scrambler).  The only significant difference is the pulldown resistor and a 100pf cap at the beginning of the circuit, which were both not present in the original.

It is a very nasty octave fuzz.  Not a lot of gain, but a lot of octave.  I posted sound clips a while back, and they should still be around somewhere.  It is my favorite octave fuzz.

LucifersTrip

thanx for the confirm...I'll look forward to that one in the future!

- Danelectro french toast ( i like the non-octave fuzz on it, go-between with distortion)
- 3 knob tonebender 90% fitted naked electronics (built and sold 3 of them, i know how it sounds, pretty nice but not nasty fuzz at all)
- silicon FF

the rest is gone or scrap :D

Germanium FF is however a collection must .... yet i have other boxes as well. I'm looking for something appropriate to this red screamer
thought about the 3 knob shin-ei yes ...

a tubescreamer would look great! ;)

In red?  :icon_eek: :icon_eek: :icon_eek:
:icon_lol:

I have a TS-7 and that's all you need (TS + turbo mode)... I didn't mention it in my "have's" since it is no fuzz ...

The blue one may become a Germ FF.

Those angled boxes with the recessed knobs were made by a dude called Hair Force One, I think.  People were crazy for them back in 05/06.  But I dont think he made too many.
Try a little tenderness.

That is a pretty cool enclosure. Someone ought to produce them. I think I'd buy a few.

There used to be a double box as well (wider). Ideal for three big knobs in a row and/or double switching. But i can't remember how thick the alu sheet was. I think the same as normal size. And that is a bit thin when stomping on such a width.

My guess is that, the reason this kind of thing is never available for long, is that it's way more time consuming than people think. A person would probably need to charge like $30 for those to make it worth it - and I don't think many people want to pay that much. Too bad, they're cool.

Steben

well, you simply need the right machinery. It's all measuring, cutting and bending.
An option to make it worthwhile is outsourcing. One measures, one cuts, one bends, perhaps one paints. This way you reduce the investments per manufacturing and thus reduce the risk / business.

i always want to buy those cream/brown boxes when i'm at frys but they feel too flimsy and are so expensive. i always pick them up and press down where the stomp switch would go and the box gives too much and top panel slips between the walls....though that may be because the screws are in. i just can't justify the cost...but man, how sweet my harmonic percolator would look in one of those...

hello i'm here! i've got some boxes left from the batch i've made some times ago. but i've got to check in the backyard how many are left.

Could do some more units coz there's still some bended U for the lower part.

Right now i'm more into making bigger boxes , from time to time.

Check my new blog: http://generaledefoutre.wordpress.com/ it's all in here.

and by the way Nice cherry red steben!
