BYOC WAH

I am thinking about getting a Wah from BYOC. Currently I have a Dime Crybaby from Hell and the bypass sucks tone. I could make the Stewmac bypass pedal and then leave the wah on constantly, but it would mean I would have to stomp on that box to activate the wah. Plus, I can't seem to get enough range on the Dime Wah. Anyone else hade experience with the BYOC wah? How does it compare to the MXR MC404 Dual inductor wah?

Unless you prefer to sell your current wah, or would like to have two wahs, I'm sure you could pretty easily modify the existing one to meet your needs. Heck you could gut your wah, use it for the shell and a few other parts, and still spend quarter of the cost of the BYOC. GGG has some good wah projects posted: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/projects/27-wah-wah
If it ain't broke...   ...it will be soon.

That is an excellent suggestion!!! I didn't even know that GGG had a wah project other than the auto-wah.

So the difference between the regular wah-wah and the mod-able wah-wah is that the mod-able wah-wah has more options like the rotary switch?

The dime wah already has the rotary switch. So basically I would be replacing the circuit board? It looks like the mod-able wah layout would be closer to the dime wah.
So essentially I would be changing the circuit and would be able to convert it to true bypass? Thanks again!

for a beginner, i would suggest keeping it simple. the rotary selector in the dimebag wah is tied into the complicated  large pcb. would be pretty difficult to salvage that part and switch the wah out to an old style simple wah.

start by building a regular diy wah in there, then add a rotary selector sweep cap switch later if you want. save that rotary switch and  leave the wires attached in case you can use them

you could re-use the inductor and pot if it is good.

How do you like your dime wah? Do You have the same problems I have?

I agree with Joe, start simple. If it's your first project, simple is better, and you can fine tune it until it does exactly what you want.  If you keep it simple you'll learn a lot, avoid as much frustration, and you'll be able to tweak it more easily. Also, search this forum for all the many wah suggestions. Chances are, any ideas you have about what you want out of your wah have been discussed at great length here.  And if the DIY bug bites, you'll end up building at least 10 different versions anyhow!

how do i like my dimebag wah? i love it! since it was thrown in as a freebie on one of my bulk wah purchases, i gutted it and turned it into a fixture for comparing wah tapers.
the dpdt switch allows instant switching between two pots for evaluation in the same wah in real time. the long cord allows it to be on the floor for proper guitar playing while the wah circ itself sits on the bench. comes in handy.

the dimebag board sits in a box somewhere , the fasel inductor was stripped and sent to someone here on the forum.

the gutshot picture above was on  someone's photobucket site.

The PCBs are currently discontinued at GGG. I guess I will have to learn how to etch my own unless someone else here can sell me one.

Where is the cheapest place to buy the materials to etch my own PCB? Basically all I need is the board(Copper Clad?) and Blue press n' peel printing paper. My friend has the rest of the materials.

Also other than being able to make the Wah true bypass, how will I be able to get more range out of the wah?
The biggest problem I have with the Dime wah other than the bypass, is the range of the wah. I have it maxed and it doesn't seem to start wahing until the footswitch is half way down. By the time you are toe down, you don;t get a full wah. Is there anything that can be done to the Dime circuit to change that? I think I am still better off going with a new PCB.

Can you move the rack and pinion to get the pot rotation more where you want it?
