what build would you guys recommend for some good metal sounds? All the distortions/fuzzes I've built so far sound great for garage rock, grungey stuff and some decent for punk but how about how about some metal?
what type of metal?
Check this one out.... http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=98954.0

I left the question kinda open ended to get more responses. I'm tricky like that sometimes. None of that Nu Metal crap though :icon_wink:
Want to build krank distortus though when I get my hand on some 386n-3. I believe the schematic buried somewhere in the gallery.
Okko Dominator (layout at sabrotone.com)

Do you enjoy asking random open-ended questions? ::)
well its not that random cus I actually do want to build something along these lines (after I complete a small clone)...but I sometimes leave things open ended to get more answers and figure maybe others will benefit from some of the responses...even if they like nu metal.
Have you tried a Dr Boogie? The impression I got from mine is that it is very flexible and goes everywhere from "warming your %^&*les" (a British expression) to "stripping paint" (universally understood).

warming your cockles?
I've built this one:

Very high gain, very massive sound.
Sounds like the Boss Metal Zone, which is a good pedal imho.
I found the Dr Boogie (My versions monicker is The Hulk) to be quite robust. A nice solid beef to it. It still lacks that "tube thickness" but for full on metal madness I like my sound a bit sharp. Let the bass worry about that low end thump.

That one looks interesting....anything with lots of knobs always catches my eye...but that many trimmers? that makes 10 things you can adjust...the build looks doable to me but actually using it has my head spinning already.
spitfire v3 :icon_twisted:
no trims, one tone...2 modes.
very versatile...cleans up nice when volume backed off too. goes well with single and hummers..
thats my main dirt now. 8)
i used 3.3n/6.8n for mode caps.

You need to click on the "Download Document" just below the "first previous" arrows on that page.
not that I have any clue how it sounds but that one looks kinda cool with lots of options....could add more switches even!
Ive built a krank distortus maximus clone and it can go trash, heavy,nu and death metal.

indeed, spitfire v5. ;)
@mark: i built a few versions of the Krank too, but had a little fizz on the tail end of dying notes though...
maybe Im lucky, my dm clone sounds angry, explosive but smooth. No fizz at all.
I also suggest the blackforest and obsidian T..
