I ran across this gem on youtube:

I'm trying to figure out what fuzz is being used to get this sound. It sounds a little like a Germanium Fuzzrite but a little bit starved, more gated and less saturated. Anybody got a guess??? Would love to get close to this but not sure which circuit would be a good platform to use or modify to get it...
Sounds like a really weak Maestro Fuzztone to me. Either the transistors were really low gain or his guitar pickup is ultra low output?
I agree sounds like a maestro fuzztone. Either poorly biased, low gain or attack knob turned back.

Or sweetly biased if you happen to like it :icon_wink:
I don't know the band or tune, but the label screams mid-60's. Worth considering that every distortion from that era, behaves differently, depending on the input level and signal properties. A fuzz being used with a Tele will sound different than the very same unit being used by someone playing a big jazz box with a floating wooden bridge. One of the many reasons why so many of us fail at nailing treasured sounds from that era: we're playing different guitars with different kinds of pickups.
There CAN be more reasons than that, but don't forget to factor guitar-type in.
Hollow body with a generic junk fuzz?
