Title: Rat LM308 is there a modern equivalent ?
Post by: copperheadroads on February 27, 2016, 11:44:56 PM
I want to build a couple Rat circuits & I see the Rare LM308 is hard to fine & a little pricey compared to other chips .Is there a modern chip manufactured today that will sound pretty much exactly like the original lm308 chip ?.

I believe the new Rats have OP07 chips in them. These are currently in production and sound very similar, though there are some who feel the lm308 is the only way to go with a Rat.

TL070 with a small value compensation cap, higher than the circuit calls for, like 150-220pF

I find the 308 quite easy to find and purchase, but the op07 is a close call, it sounds spot on (and it's the one you find in the later rats)

A little pricey, yea; hard-to-find, naaa.

I agree that the TL070 is a good choice, and I have stock. Here is another part that I have tested in the RAT and is a good value:

I will have the OP07 in about a week.

I use Chinese LM308s, just over $1 a piece shipped and they sound great. Still a bit more than TL070, but I dig them.

I think an NE5534 IC may work
