Title: r.o.g. thor resistor question
Post by: nepalnt21 on September 25, 2018, 08:59:54 PM
i am trying to breadboard this http://runoffgroove.com/thor.png circuit, but a lot of these resistor values are not amongst the set of resistors i bought.

my question is: must i add up resistors in series to get almost to the exact value, or can i use whichever ones i have that are closest?

So I built one of these and it sounds fantastic.  The values in this unit are quite common in other desirable builds so I would certainly recommend that you acquire them ASAP.  That being said you can usually go +/- 10% or so and not really notice any adverse audio horribleness.  This isn't true for some stuff like Jfet biasing etc.. but as a general rule guideline.

Resistors are cheap AF so just round up some if you're way out, or stack them in series like you said already.  Enjoy the Thor.  It's great

i cant wait!!

thanks for the reply. i'll breadboard it with the stacked values in the meantime, and give up the dukats for a serious resistor set for the final build.

cheers!

If you are not in a hurry, get them off of AliExpress. I got 1000 resistor of 30-something difirent values for like €4,- on a discount. I tested like 50 of  them and theyre surprisingly, all within 5% of the values.

I should suggest you to replace 100k U1 NFB loop resistor with a same value pot, wired as variable resistor, omit Bottom switch (as long as your pot can go down to near zero ohms..), name its knob as Gain, rename Gain knob as Pre-Gain (it should be also replaced by a resistive voltage divider of your taste).. :icon_wink:
