Title: How to wire this mini dc jack?
Post by: ReeceAblaze on October 22, 2019, 08:12:03 AM
Hello everyone I bought this mini dc Jack and it arrived today and I realised I dont know which contact connects to the barrel and the centre pin. Does anyone have an idea as to how I can find out?

The connector I bought: https://www.bitsbox.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=225_232&products_id=1699

The shorter tab is ground, long is ++.

Solder up some wires with croc clips on the ends to a male 2.1mm.
Label them. Stick it in the socket.
Offer up the continuity tester to the bare wire ends and lugs to see what connects to what.

Voila.

Now you have a handy dandy croc clip power supply for testing circuits out of the box.

Don't bits box have a data sheet for it on the sale page?

They actually don't for this one.

But like Brian said, shorter lead is centre pin (ground), longer lead is barrel (positive).

Thanks Nathan that should clear it up for the op.
It's not evident from the picture on the web site that one lug is longer.
Sorted. Good work guys.

It's taken me a long time (sloooow bunny...), but the way I remember this now is to think of a battery symbol:

The long line corresponds with the long lug and is positive.  (And similarly short line = short lug = negative.)

Excuse me guys, but tabs correspond to pin & barrel..
(they DON'T correspond to any kind of polarity..)  :icon_wink:

Maybe we need a mnemonic.  Something like POLARITY (Positive Or Long All Right If Training Yaks).  Ok, maybe I'm no good at coming up with mnemonics.   :icon_redface:
