Title: Hughes & Kettner Replex
Post by: Yazoo on March 11, 2020, 01:15:58 PM
Is there any information available on the Hughes & Kettner Replex, specifically the FX-HK98B1 module? Is this a custom chip or is there an equivalent available?

If anybody has any photos they could share, i would be very interested.

The fact that it has HK in the model of the chip leads me to believe it's either a custom chip or a rebranded one. I know FV-1 does pretty well for multi-head delays, I've built a few on it, though I feel like the tube section is more for show than anything. The whole thing would absolutely be DIY-able with an FV-1 though.

I looked at the schematics for this. The only obvious clue is the chip requires a 5 Volt supply which rules out some possibilities.

Ah, that would definitely rule out it being a rebranded FV-1. I'm not seeing a programming interface on there though, is that somewhere else on the schematic? Also where did you find the schematic? My quick google search didn't turn anything up. I'm interested in what they did with the tube in there.

I couldn't contain myself and bought a Replex at a good price. I couldn't get in close enough to get good photographs but there are several large surface mount chips on the digital board, a Xilinx XC9572 CPLD chip, a BSI BS62LV256SC-70 Ram chip, an ICE RV98 chip which I couldn't find on Google and one other chip.

The conclusion - not a viable DIY project, at least not for me!

Well now I have to see pictures :P I was not expecting to ever see a Xilinx chip in anything stompbox related.

I've put it back together. This is unfortunately an out-of-focus picture but the Xilinx chip is top right.

Well that solves the mystery of the RV98B1 for sure, it is a custom module with a handful of chips on it. But the most important question, how does it sound?

It's got me thinking of trying to do something similar but with a 6N21B and an FV-1 so I can put it in a smaller package :P
