I was under the impression that 4401s (and 2222s) were pretty standard transistors for simple silicon fuzz. Now, for the life of me, I can't seem to find them used anywhere!
Does anybody have a schematic for a fuzz using 4401s?
SUBQUESTION: Were I to replace a listed transistor with what I have, how would I calculate capacitance and resistance modifications for differing hfe?

2N4401s should work well in a fuzz
Seach for others posts and thread at this web site. A lot has been posted over the years. IIRC Aron's 1st forum started around 1996 or maybe a little later so there have been many posts about fuzz circuits
Also, though not as gainy as a fuzz face, a bazz fuss circuit should work too. It is pretty simple and only requires the one transistor. Just make note of the E B and C pins when whacking that transistor in place.
The 2N4401 is a general purpose NPN transistor with hfe of about 300. You can use it basically in any effect that uses a 2N3904 or BC549 or 2N5088 or any other general purpose NPN transistor.
The peak hFE is specified at IC = 150 mA, versus 10 mA for the 2N3904, so it's optimized for higher currents.
