Title: GGG brassmaster blend mod... Help!
Post by: RogePiltoney on June 22, 2021, 01:36:43 PM
Hello! I am trying to build the GGG brassmaster clone. In the instructions it says the "[Bass Volume and Brass Volume knobs] can be a dual-gang 10k pot each wired opposite so that it functions as a mix control." I am not really well-read in electronics, and so I really don't understand what this means in terms of how I would wire and solder it differently if I wanted to do this modification. I understand that a dual-gang pot is just two pots stacked, but a bunch of questions come to mind:

1. Why would I want both knobs to be dual gang? Wouldn't I only want 1 blend knob?
2. If I wired one to be a blend knob, what would be the point of the other knob? Would I just remove it, or would it still serve as a dry/fuzz volume knob that the other knob just blends?
3. The big one: The original wiring diagrams only specify the wiring for the regular 3-lug pots. So now there are 6 new lugs (2 single-gang pots are now dual-gang). How do I wire them????

Here is the wiring diagram for the pots: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/ggg_brassm_wiring2b.pdf
and the general instructions page: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/effects-projects/bass/maestro-brass-master/

Like I said, I really am not trained in electronics, but love the challenge of these DIY kits, so please just be as specific as possible and assume I know nothing!! I really am eager to learn this stuff. Thank you all so much in advance!!!

Sam

PS - I already have contacted the creator of GGG, but honestly he really doesn't seem to understand why I'm confused and after several follow-up emails I just don't want to bug him anymore with my stupidity haha

you only need to have one dual pot with one knob for both volumes.  I'd wire the brass volume normally and switch wires 1 and 3 on the bass volume so as the brass increases, the bass decreases. Just treat each section as a single standard pot.

Thanks for the response! So are you saying that (in addition to the regular wiring for Bass Volume on one row of lugs) I should send the same wires that I solder to the single-gang Brass to another row of the dual-gang Bass, but with the outer lugs reversed? Which row of 3 should i solder to what?

Thanks again!

Exactly. Also, it doesn't matter which pot section is which. It'll work the same either way.
