Title: BD2 Phat Mod?
Post by: GLPE on July 20, 2005, 11:11:50 PM
How noticable is the change in tone when you flip the toggle switch in the phat mod on the Boss BD2 Blues Driver?
I just did one and I can barely hear any differece between my two toggle switch settings, I am wondering if I did it correctly.

Turn the gain all the way up, and hit the a string when you toggle the switch.
BARELY noticeable.

so It is barely noticeable, and that doesnt mean that I did it wrong, right?

The difference is not stunning. I hear it in the "o" lower mids rather than bass.

You most likely did it correct, It is just not a dramatic change -- definately not enough to warrant it to have it's own switch IMO. :)

Take care,

I did it, didn't notice much.

So I used the toggle switch to instead add an additional .047 cap to the input cap.  Still can't hear much difference.

If you flick it on whilst playing a low "fifth" chug on E/A strings, you will
hear some more "low mid/Bass"
I would say that its a bit subtle, but it depends where your gain is set and
what amp/cab you are using.
You wont hear much change at all on a small combo !!

Marty.

If a person wants a noticeable bass boost, you want to increase the value of c22, which is a .22uf tantalum.

Are there any other parts that should be changed to make it sound better (apart from those mentioned in 'Keeley mod') ?

There is a TON more things that can be done to the bd-2.
I have a ton of mods available at http://www.guitartone.net/ but they are purchase only. I'm sure there are several around that will help give you some more pointers.

Sure -
experiment with the diodes at d7, d8, d9, d10, d1, and d3.

Germaniums will give it a good flavor, though a bit fuzzy.
Throw in a couple of leds in d9 and d10 for some assymetrical goodness.

Also, I accidentally misstated the tantalum cap at c22. It is a .15uf stock, and for more bass, make it a .22uf, though this may make it too much bass, so experiment to taste.

Make c17 and c19 into .01uf's...adds a nice presence without being 'ice-picky' like the stock pedal.

I like to put .1uf's on the tone control cap.

Hope that helps! :)

Take care,
Brian
