Title: HW-2 PROJECT FINISHED WAH VOLUME SURF TORNADO SIREN PEDAL
Post by: jmasciswannabe on October 20, 2005, 07:14:53 PM
This is basically like the ha-9p. I bought this pedal off the internet with the intentions of reverse engineering it and actually making a contribution to th forum. It's board is labeled hw-2. It can act as a wah or volume pedal. It can also add in surf or tornado sounds (pink or white noise). Finally, it has a switch that can start a siren up, stomping the switch again makes it fade back down. An appropriate build for the latest weather in the south.  :D You can catch a soundclip over at tonefrenzy.

The transder, schematic and laout can be foud here:

A few things of importance:

- resistors all stand on end, originally carbon, you might use metal film
- use small capacitors if you can, not a lot of room on the board
- transformer in the layout is actually a wah inductor!!!
- transistors can be substituted for 2n5088s, but pay attention to pinout - the original
circuit was a bit noisy maybe this will help (please correct me if I am wrong here!)
- trimpot stands up, too, circular design, came set at 9.2k
- original board labeled hw-2, not sure who made this one, very similar to ha-9p
- schematic redrawn from Fresh Sounds Honey Company ha-9p, not sure who originally drew it
- special thanks to Bill Blanchette (bluesdevil)for his hard work on the schematic and
  correcting wiring and layout errors!!!!!

Please let me know of any errors, mod suggestions, layout suggestions, etc....

Have fun!

Looks V cool. Have never seen a comparable DIY project.

Might be an idea to wrap the whole thing in a PDF. Draw a layout+PCB transfer graphic in a graphic program, ie MS visio.

Use your graphic program of choice.

can convert it to PDF with cutePDF writer (freeware).

I dont like hand drawn layouts...

Thanks for this project. A PDF of it will be great.

nelson - I chose it because it was something different to do, I am hoping a lot will try it out. I didn't like making the hand drawn out layout either! I was finally able to figure out how to go in and put numbers by all the parts.

marcos - thanks for sending me the ha-9p schematic to begin with!!!

It might be a little while until I get back to it, but if anyone else wants to make it into a pdf file I will be more than happy to send the original word documents and pictures to them. This project really made me appreciate all the work others have done to get their projects posted.

I think I will try this project, it sounds really nice. Im gonna use one of those behringer wahs when they are available. But I'm not sure if they are controlled by a led/ldr combo or a pot. If it shows that it is controlled by the led/ldr combo, could this be used instead of the wah pot?
Is It confirmed?
And where can I get 4P4T rotary switches in Europe?

Thanks for a great little project!

I would be happy to make a layout for it.

Send me the files.

I didnt want to offend you. I was only giving my honest opinion.

Nelson - no offense taken! It would be killer if you want to make the layout for it! I will send you everything! I was hoping this would be a group effort. Can you put it into a pdf file as well? Or if anyone else wants to....

britt - wish I had a good answer for you with the led ldr combo....I think it would work, but the problem you might run into is setting it just right. That pot ends up controlling four effects, volume, wah andthe 2 noise parameters. IT was alittle tricky to get it set up with the regular pot to get it to wah in a nice range, accurate max volume and have no noise at either the toe or heel down. As far as confirmation I am 100% on all part values and the layout. I am sure the transitors are labeled right, but the biggest problem fator might be the rotary switch. I ended up doing the offboard wiring according to the schematic bluesdevil did for me. Thanks again Bill, you rule! This was different in a few places than how the hw-2 i bought was, the catch is that the surf and tornado sounded pretty much alike in the one I bought, so I half-expected a problem somewhere. I am thinking the rotary switch was wired a little wrong. Unfortunatly I  took out all the comp resistors and all the caps as well as the transistors in order to lessen noise. I am putting an order for the metal resistors this weekend and hopefully will be able to verify it by next weekend.

Just want to thank Ian (jmasciswannabe) for letting me participate and to Marcos Munky for coming up with the original schematic. I didn't build it yet to verify, so I've been  anxiously awaiting Ian's results in a few days. Component values were mostly the same, main difference between the original schematic and the retraced one for his pedal is there is a trimpot in place of 2 resistors and the other end of the "hanging" cap that is connected to ground/siren pot lug 1 now has a home. The rotary switch poles are numbered according to the info I was given.... wished I had a 4pole 4position switch to actually build this thing. Mouser has a 6pole 4position rotary switch made by Alpha that should work just as well.... and for only $3.00, I believe.
Looking forward to seeing Nelson's PDF project package, something I need to learn about doing myself in the future.  I've got a hurricane to contend within the next few days, wish me luck!!!!

Got your mail Ian.

I will convert it to PDF like all my other layouts.

Pretty busy making a few other pedals today. Prob do it sometime next weekend.

I tried to build the neoctavia from tonepad but I couldn't get the thing to work. So could I just use the transformer from that? or do you have somemore info about the transformer?

It's an inductor. Try .5H like a crybaby inductor.

I mean the transformer mentioned in the build reports.

Hurricane Wah's  (I have 2, a Honey and a Shin-Ei) don't have a transformer. Only an inductor which happens to be built around a core ocasionally used for transformers. A crybaby inductor would be a perfect replacent as a starting point.

Oh... Forgive me I don't know much about wahs and the like. But the inductor is the pot, right?
I just won this wah on ebay that I'm gonna use for this pedal:

But I have no idea if the pot works

No. The inductor is not the pot.
Maybe spending an evening in the beginners section will help getting your basic components knowledge straight ;)

thanksforthe info dirk! The thing in there looks just like a transformer. I should have pieced that one together though, I was wondering why this didn't have an inductor.  I guess I will need to put that in the parts list and project notes! Luckily I have a yellow fasel that I have been waiting to incorporate in a project. The layout wont be suited vey well for it, but I suppose I will manage it somehow! Maybe nelson can make the layout better to use a typical wah inductor?!

That Mr.Crybaby is a classic. Gutting a $100 dollar wah to built a $50 dollar wah???

Eh, I've done worse...

I have been watching.  ;)

I thought the "transformer" was an inductor judging by the schem.

I will make the layout to fit different inductors as opposed to a transformer.
Still havent started the layout yet, will get on it this weekend.

As far as I know it's defect. That's atleast what it says in the description.

I would repair it and sell it on, as long as its cost effective. Then I would use the profit to buy a cheaper wah enclosure and components for this project.

I am sitting staring at the schematic for this. I cant figure out the layout you have done Ian......as in how to wire up the switches and offboard connections, its really confusing, so I am just going to construct a layout from the schematic only. The schematic is a little confusing too, but I am sure I will figure it out. If I need any help I will give you an email.

nelson - ya,definitly let me know if you have any questions regarding the layout or schematic. You have got to have the layout page and the offboard wiring in front of you to make the connections. I labeled all the wires with different colors, except for a couple which are designated 1 and 2. I have got some pnp and a copper blank with your name on it. Looking forward to the new layout!

Dan - haven't found a working one of these for 50 bucks....most of them on ebay are going for at least 75 and up. And of course the "vintage" ones are 125 and up.

Sorry about that. I don't surf ebay effects as much as I used to.

Hee hee, yea, "vintage" is way more valuable than "old".

Not yet, I will get round to it, its on my "to do" list. I am really inundated with uni work just now.  :icon_cry: :icon_cry:

I have two shells one waiting for this to be put in it so I am definately going to get round to it.

Anyone got the schem or layout they can post?
