If you're not worried about the "mojo factor" of the original JRC4558D, then you should find it relatively easy to find another manufacturers 4558 op amp at a half decent electronics store.

Use a socket for the op-amp IC, then you can use almost any dual op-amp to get the circuit running, then update the 'mojo' at a later date.

will using a different op amp degrade the quality noticibly?

Using a TA4558 as opposed to a JRC4558 for instance will not produce a noticeable difference IMO.

just try a couple. you might like (for example) a tlo72 better than a 4558

hey i think i'm actually just gonna buy off of small bear electronics it seems like they have everything i need to build this

this may sound dumb but the enclosures he sells for $13.50 will work for housing my project right?

http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=48

also looking at the schematic i'm using (the one from tonepad for the ts808 tubescreamer) i dont see a switch for bypass how would i put this in? do they have it at small bear

http://www.tonepad.com/project.asp?id=1

thanks alot for the help

That enclosure would work very good for this project. And smallbear also has the switches you need, the easiest would be to use a 3PDT switch (Aron who runs this forum also has them for sale). As for wiring them up there is a own project at Tonepad found here: http://www.tonepad.com/getFileInfo.asp?id=76 (http://www.tonepad.com/getFileInfo.asp?id=76) which should explain it for you. Scroll down and you will find the wiring shematic for the 3PDT switch.
Good luck with your build!
