I'm pretty sure the small video clip made the rounds here a year or two ago, and it seems thanks to it, Congolese band Konono No.1 is getting more exposure (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/15/arts/music/15kono.html?ex=1289710800&en=10b2196f346e6ddf&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss) and even radio play!
Check out this better video (http://www.crammed.be/craworld/movies/konono_promo.htm).
More (http://www.crammed.be/craworld/crw27/e/index.htm) about the band with some hardcore DIY ethic! Home brew electronics, electric thumb pianos, percussion galore!
And listen to this (http://homepage.mac.com/monkeysars/.Public/Paradiso.mp3) badass recording from the band, making a case for the electric thumb piano being the new electric guitar!
Tim!
I heard about these guys via the links page on the tortoise website..
can't get enough of those metallic industrial tones mixed with the huge african drums sound
i love it, and its great that more opportunities for people to hear them are coming around!
alas i dont listen to radio much anymore, but i doubt the same is happening here in oz..
nonetheless, always great to hear about these things, and know im not alone in the funky music i like
