Title: Effect brand correspondences (Roland-Boss, Ibanez-Maxon, etc.)
Post by: stm on March 22, 2006, 02:57:52 PM
This started in another thread and I thought it might me interesting to summarize and complete the list.  Perhaps it could have its place in the wiki.

the Nipponese are known for rebranding their effect series ... In the early days Shin-Ei - Jax - Bruno - Royal - Ibanez and later Roland - Korg - Yamaha - Boss - Pearl - Maxon - Guyatone ... in some cases identical designs, and some schematics done by the same art dpt - always wondered about that ... I'm curious to know what's different about the Yamaha mkII series in the end

jc

So to summarize we have the following correspondences:

1) Boss / Roland
2) Yamaha / Korg
3) Ibanez / Maxon

What are the other pairings (Pearl, Shin-Ei, Guyatone, Jax, Bruno, Royal) mentioned above?

I am especially interested in Pearl, since there are like 6 or 7 schems available.  Also, knowing about Yamaha/Korg was eye opening for me.  I was able to take a peek at the Yamaha Octaver (OC-01) by means of the Korg OCT-1.  I remember having played a Yamaha octaver many years ago and kept the feeling it tracked way better than the Boss OC-2... and the schematics are indeed different!

add electra (their later period anyway) to the ibanez maxon section.  i have an electra ep150 that says maxon on the board.

The Pearl's all have the Pearl "logo" on the board, but as they are a Drum hardware company
it seems hard to believe that they were not "farmed out" to Maxon etc !!
BTW, The Flanger/Chorus/Octaver and Overdrive are all superb sounding circuits, the OD05
is a TS808 with variable Eq  !  :D

I thought some had KLM boards thus connecting them to Keio/Korg/etc... My only Pearl is a goofy drum synth and it does say Pearl on the boards.

Electra also used to be rebranded EH pedals (owned a Electra 875 Phase shifter wich had a EH issue "J" Small Stone PCB)
(this would lead to believe that electra is a "rebrand" name)

Analog Tom would be the dude to ask about the lineage - he has a section in his effects book with revealing interviews of Fumio Mieda (now big head @ Korg) and others ... I'm just going by limited info here - for example, the Univox Superfuzz circuit finds its way under Shin-Ei, Bruno, Royal, Ace-Tone, Jax and Ibanez export appelations, plus or minus small variations - Dan N knows more about this ... in a related way, Mieda's bulb-photocell type circuits - Resly-Tone, Vibra-Chorus, and the Univibe itself - have Shin-Ei, Lafayette and Jax export names ... I read somewhere that the Guyatone Slow-Volume is a surface mount version of the Boss Slo-Gear - I'm tempted to lump Roland, Boss, Pearl, Maxon, Guyatone in the same "later" design group(s) ... the Korg - Yamaha relationship is surprising, then again ...

boy, I miss Nihong ... I feel like commiting Sepuku right now ...  :icon_cry:

Owning Analogman's Book and reading it I was quite surprised when reading
the Yamaha section in the book wich was:

"Well, they made everything else, why not effects pedals?
Pedal effects included OD-100 overdrive ODE-100 Overdrive exciter
and FL-100 Flanger"

That's all of it, wich is clearly a bit of a blind spot right there.
Yamaha really did some very interesting things early on
(since he mentions only **-100 wich is third generation)
The **-01 series came out in '80/'81 and span a large number of
different effects.
Even the Korg section of the book doesn't mention anything about the **-01 lineage
(I don't think it's purpose is to be a definitive guide, nor is it complete)
It does state that Nady and Guyatone were operating together on several effect lines.

As the "logo" is the same "Pearl" drums use, I'm presuming that it was the same company ...I
could be wrong .... it happens  !
I have the Chorus/Flanger/Phaser/Octave/Overdrive/Distortion .... perhaps the analog delay
one day, if I can find one for less than £100  !!

Are you talking about the small black pedals, the double size, or the ones before them?  Or some other Pearl pedals?
