hey guys, i was wondering is there a stompbox that will do harmonizing lead parts in thirds well? I tried a Digitech Whammy but it wasnt wahat i was really looking for. I would like a pedal that would have the original note come through and then the 3rd note to harmonize with it. I dont even know if such a pedal exists. Sound sort of like Iron Maiden, Kirk Hammett. Well, the problem with this is that it will make everything you play sound major. When two guitarists harmonize in thirds, the third is occasionally flatted so it isn't off key. Or you'll need a stomp switch to switch between flat third and natural third.

There's a schematic at Mark Hammer's site that does harmonize in 3rds, 5ths, and with a few octave up/down options. It's the EMM Harmonic Generator. Not sure about the tracking.
He wants something able to choose minor/major intervals based on a scale. It needs actual pitch detection.
Digitech had a Whammy/Wah pedal in their XP line (now discontinued) that did harmonizations in any interval and in any key or mode. Pretty cool. The tracking wasn't bad except at extreme settings, but then you could get some pretty wicked industrial sounds by pushing the limits of the unit. Digital of course. Plus it had the standard whammy and wah functions as well as a volume pedal. You can probably find them on eBay for cheap now.
Well, it's not a stompbox and you can't build it yourself anyway but a friend of mine has Guitar Rig 2, that thing can do some amazing harmonizing. Actually, that thing can do a lot of amazing things, but you only asked about harmonies. Expensive though and you need a fancy soundcard, my friend bought it with the foot controller but the built-in soundcard is junk.
I'm guessing that for guitar you would want something like the Boss Pitch Shifter that was mentioned up the thread a ways, but you can also sometimes pick up Digitech IPS-33 and IPS-33B (rackmount) smart shift harmonizers (or something like that) on eBay for $100-$300 or so. The sax player who has been touring with Average White Band is using or has used an IPS-33B to simulate the tight sax section parts from Pick Up the Pieces, etc.

Agreed. This will do fixed intervals as well as "intelligent pitch shifting" where you set it for the key and interval and it will track 'harmonically' through the scale.
I bought this one earlier this year and have posted about it. Search for "PS-5" and it should show up. I also did an HC review of it.
