Title: 100k ICAR taper wah pots
Post by: rockgardenlove on December 22, 2006, 07:16:18 PM
I need some 100k ICAR taper pots, but of course Smallbear's got recalled, and I don't want to pay the 25 bucks for the Fulltone one...
Anybody got a source?
Thanks!

I noticed that Small Bear didn't have them on their site anymore... why? What Recall?

It seemed like a good time for an update.

I and the commercial customer who has been testing these agree on what we think the problem is. I gave instructions to the factory, and 20 pieces that incorporate some mechanical changes are supposed to be on their way to me from Taiwan now. I hope to have them out to customers for testing mid-next week. If all goes well, I should be shipping Black Bears again after New Year's.

I was just going to ask related questions. I'd like to build the Freeper wah. It calls for a 100K "hot pot" - is that what you're talking about in this thread? Also, can I just drop the freeper board into a Small Bear wah case? I've never owned a wah pedal, so I don't know the mechanics of different models.

I tried to link to the Freeper layout/schematic, but I can't find it now. It's an inductorless design.

Does anyone know what "Type & Value" are used in the Teese - Real McCoy Picture Wah?

Also, does it really make that much of a difference using an "ICAR" taper... & How?

Thanks,
Kevin

100k hot potz is made by dunlop. good pot.

small bear's wah shell case is great, and all dunlop/vox wah shells are the same, i assure you.

the difference is there, but subtle. there are too many pieces to the puzzle to say that the pot alone will enhance the tone by a milestone.

teese has his pots custom made, the ROC POT, and its value is not a big secret.

Hi Everybody,

Here's a little trick that will make all this "Icar taper" stuff moot.  Locate the .22uF cap that feeds the wiper of the wah pot.  Repace the original .22uF with a .33uF.  That's it.  Use this with the standard Dunlop HotPotz to simulate the Icar taper. I've given this modification away to a few people and it can be found in a few "relatively new" wah brands out there, as part of their secret sound.  Since this is my original modification and not something I learned from another source, as well as not something I use (since I have my own pots), I have no qualms about sharing it with everyone.  Sure, you won't get the Icar taper mimicked 100%, but it will go a LONG way in reproducing the effect I think you're looking for.  This will make pot replacement MUCH less of a headache.  I do NOT recommend using this modification with any "Icar taper" pots as issues can develop under certain circumstances.

Peace, Love, and Wah,
Geoffrey R. Teese
