Title: Can anyone identify this diode?
Post by: Rayman on July 01, 2007, 07:16:31 PM
I'm trying to figure out what kind of diode this is.  It's on the Guyatone OD-2. Link to picture:

Can't tell how big they are, but if they are short/fat and have quite thick leads then power diode.
They DO look a lot like a few Ge diodes that I have, but the "body" looks too shallow.
They may be quite similar to 1N4001's in a smaller and fatter glass package.

Ah! Those!

Those are what's called in the trade "LUGDs".

That's "Little Unmarked Glass Diodes". Sorry, couldn't resist.

Put a current through one with a resistor and battery and measure the voltage drop. That will tell you if it's germanium or silicon.

They look silicon to me, though. I only remember germanium in the longer-bodied glass package, but that doesn't mean there weren't any short-body germaniums.

They look a lot like 1N914's to me too, but as mr. Keen said, take it out and measure it's forward current.

ok, thanks, I'll check voltage acroos them.  I traced the Guyatone OD-2 because I was interested to see what was different than the tube screamer.  To my suprise it is exactly the same with the tone control fixed.  These diodes were the only thing that I couldn't identify.
