Title: stacking oppamps question.
Post by: SPAZ on August 24, 2007, 10:22:01 AM
Can any of you good guys elaborate or speak of experiences stacking oppamps on t.s. or similar circuts. I couldn't find threads on this subject. Are there any benefits besides head room as rumoured ?

Dano from Beavis Audio wrote some stuff about opstack on his tube screamer page

So..... What would be the practical limit of stacking? (i haven't seen photos of more than 4) At some point won't the law of diminishing returns come in to play? Or could you be all "Nigel Tufnel" about it and have them higher than the knobs coming out of a hole in the enclousure? ;)

Hi
if the main effect is due to paralleling the output resistors, the effect is proportional to the number squared.  In other words, to get much effect past n=four requires a lot of op-amps.  But if you want to go to 9 or 16 or 25, it would be interesting to hear the results, literally.
Personally, I can't see how this can have much effect, especially in a tubescreamer.  Except there is the usual commitment by the modifier to imagine an improvement.
