Something from ROG like the Umble or Dr. Boogie are the first to come in my mind...

I made an Overdrive Pro.  The 3-band EQ works fine.  It's not my favourite pedal, but is easily tailored to achieve a wide variety of familiar sounds that many will probably like.

+1 on the overdrive pro.  It's a really straight-forward build, and can be easily modded to your taste.

Hello,
I would suggest the Guv'nor
a very good sounding distortion
look at GGG.

+1 on the Guv'nor. Very easy to build and sounds really good. http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=99&Itemid=26

For something very simple but very effective, try our esteemed Aron Nelson's Smash Drive (http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=88&Itemid=26).

Guvnor is good. Depends on what sound you're after really. You can graft a Fender-style tone stack onto lots of things.
