On this forum at www.techniguitare.com I found these two FET based preamps. Has anyone build these or taken notice of them before? The x2fet I believe is meant to emulate Dime's sound on a X2 warhead and the diefet emulates a Diesel VH4.
The site and forum are in french but once you register it's not too difficult to find the schematics.
copy the url of the schem images and post the here..
I´m too lazy to suscribe to a french page (i dont speak french) just too see 2 schems...
I really, REALLY don't want to get into that snakepit again, but for the sake of prudence if not morality, don't post possibly copyrighted images from another site here without permission. Even if it is French.
On a forum however, they share information. I would be really du chauvinisme IMO if this forum wouldn't be able to view the same as another. Unless the information on the one is an offence already.
I'm putting down the links from the forum post. You should be able to reach these without login or subscription, only the forum is login protected.

Well, I don't see any harm in a little linky or two...
You want a translation into english ? :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
Diefet: I think it's not for "two FETS" but for FET version of the Diesel amplifier.
Well, that is what they are saying in french.
It would be like a ROG amp "simulator" for the Diesel.
Yeah but i think the original poster talk about ''two'' different fet preamp: the DieFet and the X2Fet... ;)

Yes Dan, a dialfect communication problem, it's diefetrent.
I am all fetct-up...
I do like the sound samples, they're not in French at least.. ;D

Hello guys
I'm the creator of the diefet project, feel free to post your opinion about this project here or on techniguitare.
We hope you will like it if you build one but keep in mind that it's forbidden to do a commercial use of this project (we worked six months on i t!) ;)
And you're totally right: it's the first Jfet simulation of a Diezel Amp: the VH4 (the channel 3 and 4).

Cool ! Great Work !
i really like that sort of cabinet simulator that you added at the end..this kind of preamps tends to give too much treble content

in fact the diefet has a lot of bass but you have 3 controls to adjust them: BASS , DEEP, and an extra control ( the resistor of 330k, can be replaced by a potentiometer of 500k)
I see that the diefet requires 12V but is biased for the J201's at 6. Any reason for this?
(I'm just realizing that I have no 12V adapters... yet)
higher voltage gives more dynamic and more tubey sound to jfet. the 9v jfet trimpot is on 4.5v, so for 12v it's 6v. it's give more dynamic to the sound, and it's a caracteristic of the diezel sound ;)
anybody started a prototype ? ;)
Can I best use a 12V balanced or unbalance adapter for this?
I'm looking at the Minwa PS-9112GSF-S 12V at the moment (from here: http://www.banzaieffects.com/Multi-Voltage-Power-Supplies-c-940.html).
Anyone know if this would work?
I'm going to give this a try, using the vero layout cut in half and folded over on itself for a double-layer board, so that I can cram it into a 1590B enclosure. Ill post pics when its done.
I was wondering, does anyone know if all the pots are linear? Or are they audio? Or a mix?
My X2FET so far, in a 1590B-size enclosure:

my god does this x2fet really sound this bad..was gonna build this...nothing like dime bag... :icon_rolleyes:

dont think i'll bother going by this crap video....or does it not do it justice?...
proper soundclip anyone?...........

Bump for X2Fet sound clips.
+1 (soundclips)
This thread, Page 1, 5th post down, under "X2Fet".
Look for the .mp3 links
BTW - Back in the "Cowboys from Hell" days, Dimebag (er, 'Diamond' then...) used to shill for Randall amps.
Maybe a conversion of his favorite from then would be in order as well...
i think he meant "new" soundclips
Oh.
OK.
P.S. I just looked it up, the Warhead was a Randall :icon_redface:, and it was solid state :icon_eek:.

Dime used solid state amps through his entire career until the Damageplan days which he then started using Krank amps. The funny thing is that he only used the Warhead for the clean channel because he didn't like the distortion channel as much as his trusty RG100. Straight from Grady's mouth (Dime's tech).
Far out...
FWIW, the X2 circuit here sounds fine by me, but I wonder what a RG100 clone would do?
EDIT: never mind...

X2Fet is absolutely not an emulator of the X2 warhead, it's a chopped down simplified 9V version of the original 24V
From reading the original schematic of the solid state Randall X2:
what's missing:
-everything between the 0.01µF input cap to the gate of the first transistor (in fact a section comprising one channel of a TL072)
- J201 FETs replace original 2N5484.
-33k biasing resistors on drains are replaced now with trimpots. Voltage supply is filtered with different components too (example: original 1000µF caps to ground on each 24V supply ( to thed rain of each transistor) is now replaced with 100µF caps
-apart from these mods, everything between the gate of the first trans and the output after the twin diode clipping stage is --exactly-- the same values.
- after the diode clipping stage, the whole original EQ + presence circuit (comprising 4 TL072 chips) and the output stage (one NE5532 chip ) is replaced with a passive simplistic eq in the x2fet.
-new simplified eq is placed --before-- the master pot, master pot which is now augmented to 100k
Originally there were a "mid level" "mid freq" "density" and "presence" controls , all omitted in the J2O1 x2fet version.
It seems pointless to sculpt a metal tone without a precise mid control. Only my opinion.
Another thing: 9V will reduce significantly the headroom compared to 24V in the first design
Do you have the schematic for the X2? And can you post it? I did make the X2FET pedal, and I like it, but always looking to see if can make better.
Thanks
Rob
