Hi everyone..I'm getting nervous with my Dynacomp.. I've got an original '78 block logo Dyna, love it..and I've built a clone using my original Dyna.. The circuit works, it sounds, but it doesn't sound as the original: when sensitivity is at min, both pedals sound the same, but increasing the sensitivity the clone get more and more gain and it become an overdrive!
I've put in it 2N5088, while the original should have 2SC1849.. Well, I have 10 2SC1849, so I tried to use them on the clone, but no sound (ok, pinout is different, but I've tried to turn 180°, but no sound, and one released smoke.. >:( )
Furthermore..the compression is different: while the original has a smooth compression, the clone compress after a bit, and faster than the original..
What can I do?

Continue to compare the two.
Use the DMM every way possible to compare the one to the other.
Voltages notes are fun to look at.

I believe that your clone is defective. You don't give any detailed debugging information (see "What to do when it doesn't work"), so anything I could guess is pure speculation. But your description could match a wrong-value load resistor from pin 6 or a problem with wiring the compression control or the transistor that feeds it. This is the purest guess, as there is no data here to work with.
Well, I mounted some 2N3904 (thanks Scott!) and the problem disappeared..but when I put the circuit in the hammond box it appeared again.. I don't know why, but the overall volume increased and the noise is pretty loud..even in bypass.. I can also hear radio when lowering the guitar volume to 0..but only when the effect is on.. :-[
Which is the same as saying that the transistors are not your problem, something else is, and you changed that something else as a side effect of mounting new transistors and putting it into a box.
indeed.. I absolutely don't know what.. Now I have to check wires, maybe there's a short between wires connection, because this occured when I closed the enclosure with the back plate..
