Title: Looking for low parts count tremolo/vibrato
Post by: mnordbye on October 18, 2008, 03:59:39 PM
I'm looking for a nice sounding tremolo or vibrato (what's the real difference really?), with as small as possible parts count. I have NO experience with these effects, but love how they are used on some songs, specially on Steppenwolfs music.. Give me a bone to chase here!  :D

If you don't mind working with tubes, have a look at Frequencycentral's Vibracaster.

Tremolo is amplitude modulation.

Vibrato is pitch modulation.

The 'Vibracaster' is actually a tremolo - Tremocaster just didn't sound right!

Have a look at the Improved EA Tremolo kit here:

Not sure how low is low though.  You really want to have a volume control as amplitude modulation effectively lowers your overall volume.

I just built one of these and it sounds great!  I added a switch to defeat the trem effect so I can use it as a clean boost as well.

GGG puts together excellent kits.  After a dozen or so builds, I can honestly say that I haven't been disappointed by a single one.  The ITS8 with "expensive boutique mods" and the PT80 delay were the MOST impressive.  Including an on-board charge pump in the PT80 was an outstanding addition for those unable to provide 18'ish volts from their power systems.

Cheers,
Dave O.

Thanks for all the suggestions! If i had any tubes, i would certainly try out the vibracaster.. I've been following the thread about converting the valvecaster to a tremolo lately..

I'll try the EA tremolo then.. sounds like a good start.
