Does anyone know how to obtain an unpainted, round Fuzz Face type enclosure? I've heard the square enclosures lack the "mojo" needed for a good fuzz unit since the fuzziness gets trapped in the corners :)

Ahem!... I must take some responsibility for that particular bit of disinformation. Thankfully you have taken it in the spirit it was intended.
They are admittedly cool enclosures and it`s a shame they can`t be picked up wholesale.
It is practically impossible to find empty enclosures of this type, and I have tried. Your best bet is to find a Fuzz face advertised as broken or not working. This way you`ll get it cheaper but even these examples don`t seem to go all that cheap. Too many savvy DIYers about I guess. I got one off ebay a couple of years ago for about £20. It was a Dunlop model and therefore not entirely authentic. It lacked the rubber triangle footrest bit.
Alternatively you could find something else that is round. I`ve used stainless steel curry dishes for enclosures but they come a poor second to a real fuzz face enclosure.
I`m not certain but weren`t the originals built into cast mic stands? I have no idea if this will be successful, but you may try Denis Cornell at www.dc-developments.com. I know he used to do his own and some reissues in that enclosure (he doesn't anymore), but may have one lying around he might sell to you.
A long shot, but a friendly email might be successful as he is a really nice guy and if he had a spare might sell it to you.

Couldn't we just use NOS decommissioned land mines? I seem to remember that they include a stompswitch.
Some candies and cookies come in nice round thick tin or AL boxes. I used them to box my Rangemaster and FF... family feeling :P
Work fine for me, but some heavy foot guys may complain.
I recently found a free lance AL/stainless steel cookware maker. He is going to make some round boxes for me, I only need to give him a rough drawing. And they are cheaper than imported ones. Getting enclosures in my country is a pita.

you could use the round base of a mic stand.....that heavy sucka' won't go sliding across the floor either when you stomp on it!
Already has a big hole in the middle for stomp switch!

I have purchased a perfect condition Fuzz Face enclosure, but to keep with the artsy/lazy scheme I have on all of my other diy pedals, I would like to REMOVE all of the red paint on this one and leave with just the unfinished metal look. Any recommendations on how to accomplish this feat? Or would it be easier to just paint it silver and call it a day?

The red paint is an all-pass filter resonant to any frequency within 0.3 volts of the enclosure's ground potential, which is exactly the bias voltage of an AC128 transistor. :icon_eek:
Don't believe me? Try building a silicon fuzz face in it.

Seriously, most any fairly aggressive paint remover should work fine, but what works best might depend on whether the original paint is powder coat or spray enamel.

And no worries on the filter issue, I'm using NPN Germanium OC140s. Unfinished enclosures resonate best with them.

This is one of those things people want often, comes up on the forum often (my own posts included a while back), and, is really hard to come by unless you a) are hardware-store savvy and can adapt objects to your use, or b) one of the several enclosure-making forum members makes a small batch. They typically fly off the shelf like hot cakes (sorry, mixed metaphors!)
One day round enclosures will arrive in plenty! We can hope.

If anyone needs a fuzz face enclosure go to www.jimdunlop.com (http://www.jimdunlop.com) and buy one, then strip the paint. Its cheaper than buying a new fuzz face and working on it.

For probably less than that you could have a local, craft-friendly sheet metal shop make something for you. They might ask for drawings in AutoCAD format (eek!) but, ...

Cookware is metal and round sometimes.
A few years ago someone mentioned using a lamp base. Might check around some thrift shops etc for an old floor lamp with a detachable base?
Revere Ware or stainless steel pan lid, some are stiff enough to support the stompswitch hole.
Use lockwashers, hope the control nuts don't come loose because they don't wedge properly to curved surface mounting holes.
Get out the anvil, flat-head chisel, and ball peen hammer, just for flattening potholes in panlids.
Great tip on Dunlop selling these, that must be new I don't remember seeing this earlier in the year when I was obsessively searching. Price is a little high in my opinion.
My search is over, I picked up a non-functioning one on ebay for $35 and had a friend who works in a machine stop sandblast it.

My go-to source for Fuzz Face-style enclosures is a mfgr of tank end caps, or tank heads. They can be found in heavy gauge or light plate thicknesses, and in diameters from 4" up. One will need to do a bit of work to be able to attach a bottom cover plate.
