I should probably point out too that C13 is 0.1uF on stock superfuzzes. The larger that cap is, the deeper the scoop will be when fully scooped.

I've been experimenting with the Superfuzz for the last month on and off and tried a lot of the mods floating around here. A great one to soften the sound and do away with the ducking effect when slamming chords with the Expander control full up is to use a "sag" control at the +9v supply. Use a 5kL pot for this. Also a switch to select germanium, silicon or no diodes is really nice. I've got so many knobs and switches on this thing it really is a Superfuzz!!
I'm going to try tacking on that 390pf cap on the last transistor to take some piercing high end off, but rolling your guitar's tone control works pretty good too. Fun circuit to tweak.
extra knobs and switches is how the superfuzz that's on my pedal board now began life ... it's housed in a rather large power supply box from a PC
I'm doing this one now to cut down on the knobs and switches and to free up a little real estate on my board
thanks for the tip on the voltage sag ... that's something I haven't tried yet on any of my pedals
Yeah man, that's kind of how it usually goes with me too. Build one with tons of controls/switches and then build another with the least amount of controls possible with the best settings tweaked on the circuit board itself. I usually end up selling the first build to fund next round of projects. :icon_lol:

I have added a voltage sag too and I agree it helps tweak the tone. I find the best tone at around 8.5V.
One mod I did was to change the resistors for the last transistor: collector 12k and emitter 2.2k.
This lets you open the volume pot a bit more and opens up the sound too. Before I did that, I found the pedal
way too loud and had to keep the volume pot almost closed, which affected the tone.
And I used a mix of 2sc828 and 2sc1815 transistors. I also tried with bc109 and bc549 but the 2sc1815 sound better in my opinion.
just soldered it up ... no hardwired pots yet because now I need to drill out a box
but I ran the leads to my breadboard and wired up pots there, ran a sin wave through it into my scope and it "looks" good
I'm not going to say the "V" word yet though until I hear it all wired up in the box

How effective are the mid and saturation controls? Are they "set it and forget it" type controls?
the saturation control is definitely a set and forget
the mid control ... ehhh, I haven't moved it since I first dialed it in ... so maybe
but I also haven't moved the expander and balance since I dialed it in either
I think having the mid control easily accessible is nice though.
Did you ever make soundclips of this? I'm seeking out a good high gain fuzz project... :icon_cool:
