Title: Sag filter on distortion/overdrive pedal
Post by: bipedal on October 06, 2009, 05:01:12 PM
Was recently checking out the Schroeder Amps (http://www.schroederguitarrepair.com/) website, as I noted that they are now building a Nels Cline custom amp (way beyond my means, but cool!).

While there, I saw they also sell an overdrive/distortion pedal called the Blister Agent, featuring:
Quotea sag filter, giving the pedal an organic feel and the ability to accentuate swirly-style effects . . .

Interesting concept!  (Doesn't look like a tube-based build...)  This has me curious -- anyone incorporated a similar theme (variable "sag" control) in their own builds?

Oooh! I stood right in front of that amp when I saw Wilco earlier in the year. It sounded great, especially with the speaker right at head level to me.

That pedal looks cool but I can't see paying $400 for any distortion pedal.

When you say "sag filter" I assume you mean a voltage sag. If thats what you mean then yes, I have added it to a pedal before. I actually have an adjustable power supply so I can easily do it to any pedal. The results depend on the pedal of course but I have found that it works best on a "fuzz" pedal. If you mean something else by sag filter then I'm interested in what ever it does!!  :icon_mrgreen:

Take a look at 'the Punisher', it drops V+ when input is strong, pretty cool, hook it up the the PS on...different things...twiddle the knobs of course, note that the bias on some circuits may shift to some degree when the V+ drops.
Or get an LED lighting upon attack, then work with that.
Pick a Fuzz or Distortion, try something on it.
You could put a treble control acuated by the..LED lights the LDR, LDR drops R value, capacitor shunts more HF's to Gnd. through the LDR when attacks are hit.
Take a look at what lights LEDs' in env. filters. Nurse Quacky has a popular 'LED lightin' subcircuit.

-- maybe, or at least a filter that attempts the reproduce the sonic impact of that sag in the pedal's distortion.

I'm not directly familiar with that product beyond the info posted on their site.  Just seemed like an interesting concept that I don't recall seeing implemented before (though I certainly may have missed prior discussions of it).

Yes, I was wondering about something like that: rather than implementing an actual voltage change within the pedal circuit, use some other adjustment to the clipping response in an attempt to mimic the sound of so-called amp sag.

Hmmm.
