I saw these circuits a few years back, which are not the easiest to follow in some respects, but the principles (or is it principals :-\) are possibly worth consideration - if you're awake :icon_biggrin:

The Envelope Follower looks interesting, and I haven't compared it with the MXR Env Filter yet, and certainly more signal conditioning than that of the average crappy auto wah.

Breadboarded and pulled out - not very good in my view!
