Title: Question about pinout convention for pots on schematics
Post by: miketeachesclass on April 20, 2010, 02:03:13 PM
So I've got a question.

I've seen pots on schematics a few different ways, and it can be difficult to tell just looking at the schematic how they're supposed to be oriented.  Does convention dictate that the schematic symbol has default lug locations when they're not labelled?

For example, is the following pinout considered standard?

Or is this pinout equally likely?

Is there any way to tell just by looking at the schematics, what the needed arrangement of lugs is?

Thanks,
Mike

The first diagram is not correct, second one is fine.

They map from schematic to actual pot like this:

I always think of it as turning the knob: 1 is fully counter clock-wise and 3 is fully clockwise.

I always have trouble with pots, not so much the obvious ones, but even those I can get wrong... so I like most when people, and I do this myself, just put a dot at the most clockwise point.

For the life of me I can only remeber which is lug 2...
So I keep these two pics on my desktop

Hope that helps,I have read there is a proper way to draw schematic wise pots that rotate cw/ccw ,but forget how/where,so I really appreciate it when people take the time to document the taper and rotation on the schematic.
