Title: picking resistors off mouser?
Post by: pazuzu on April 20, 2010, 02:07:48 PM
there are so many fracken options i am really getting overwhelmed here:

Quote• Carbon Composition Resistors  (2,071)
  • Carbon Film Resistors (5,460)
  • Ceramic Composition Resistors (642)
  • Current Sensing Resistors (8,514)
  • Fusing Resistors (38)
  • Jumper Resistors / Wire Bridges (443)
  • Metal Film Resistors (33,249)
  • Power Resistors - SMD (1,156)
  • Power Resistors - with Leads (9,141)
  • Precision Resistors (3,651)
  • Replacement Resistors (7)
  • Resistor Kits & Accessories (139)
  • Resistor Networks & Arrays (28,161)
  • Thick Film Resistors (40,447)
  • Thin Film Resistors (47,967)
  • Wirewound Resistors (20,326)

also what tolerance and power rating? i want to use mouser because i already have all the box caps, trimpots, etc. for a dr boogie in my cart. quick help is appreciated i want to put my order through.:)

Metal film, 1/4 watt is what I would use in that circuit.  I would crack the book open and find a vendor that sells at least the e12 series and buy all of your stuff from them.  The website is kinda unweildy when you want alot of different values from the same vendor with the same characteristics (ROHS, temp, voltage rating, form factor, whatever).

The only other resistors I have ever seen used in pedal and tube circuits would be carbon comp (old school resistors used for "mojo"), carbon film (inexpensive tan resistors you see every where), metal film resistors (similar to carbon comp in application, but "quieter"), power resistors (screen resistors in tube amps), wire wound resistors (similar to power resistors, just different insides).

thank you. yes that website is a cluster@#$% but it has almost everything, plus it's nice to have to sort, you learn more.

The filter on the site is your friend.

I like Mouser for the ability to dial in exactly what I want through the filter. Generally for resistors I use the following requirements -

Metal Film
(Make sure "Stocked" is checked)
Select KOA Spear in the manufacturer drop-down box (they are the cheapest, disregard this if you want to see all options)
0.25 Watt (1/4 Watt)
1% Tolerance
Axial Termination Style

Then select what resistance you want, add to cart, and just push the back button of the browser a few times to select another resistance value.
I follow the same basic steps with capacitors as well, lets me easily access a specific manufacturer's series. Hope this helps.

you can get 2% tolerance for a slightly cheaper option, too!

yea that's exactly what i ended up with, koa spear 1/4 watt, 1% 100ppm.

Quick and easy...

Xicon 1/4w carbon film Mouser PN = 291-Value-RC, so a 10K reistor would be 291-10K-RC, a 100r resistor would be 291-100-RC.
Xicon 1/4w metal film Mouser PN = 271-Value-RC, so a 10K reistor would be 271-10K-RC, a 100r resistor would be 271-100-RC.

The catch is the 1M resistor. Carbon film is 291-1M-RC while the metal film is 271-1.0M-RC.

cool, would you recommend that of KOA speer? i am not opposed to paying .50-1$ as opposed to .5$ for resistors by the way, i figure i spent the money for wima box caps, so what's another 5-10$ for mojo. cool componenets is what sets us apart from huge corporations.:)

i did put the order through already, i saved the project, not sure if you guys will be able to view it:

I have never had any problems with KOA Spear. If you want mojo go for Vishay/Dale - you can get the values printed on the packaging instead of reading colored bands :)

BTW, I see you ordered J201 and J201-D27Z. Looking at the data, the only thing I can find different is the packaging (TO-92 and TO-92-3, basically no difference?), what did you find different other than the price?

yea one was backordered so i ordered the other.:) and i will definitely go with the mojo after i get good at band reading.
