Title: Effects relay question

I'm working on making an effects relay/loop unit, using a footswitch controller and a rackmount unit. I was looking around on the internet and found Geofex, but i soon became confused. What is the difference in the end between doing a simple circuit like this: http://www.geofex.com/FX_images/relays2.gif (http://www.geofex.com/FX_images/relays2.gif) and something complicated like this: http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/remoteftsw.pdf (http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/remoteftsw.pdf).

Also, does anyone know of any other schematics for something similar to this (like a voodoo lab gcx but without midi).

Mr. Aleksi has made a relay unit which even I understand. I had trouble with the GEOFEX article too.
