Title: Fuzz Factory Questions
Post by: BadIdeas on December 08, 2010, 08:28:04 PM
I was thinking about building this pedal sometime in the near future, but I'm not sure the pot tapers are quite right, or if the pedal would be different with others.
I'm looking at the Factory de Fuzz stripboard layout by Renegadrian, as well as a schematic I drew out based on this layout, and it says that all pots are linear, but I'm sure that the volume pot should be log at least. I have read that the pots seem to behave oddly in this circuit, and I'm thinking it may just be the weird tapers. For example:
According to my schematic, the gate pot seems to interact with the Drive pot to set the gain of the second transistor, and in fact, adjusting the Drive control doesn't seem to change much at all. It seems like Gain controls are usually logarithmic. Should that be the case with either of these, or would that actually hinder the pedal's versatility? I have also noticed that the Comp seems to be a gain control for the third transistor. In simulation, it appears to increase the size of the square side of the wave compared to the round side.
Any opinions on tapers?

I was also thinking about using a couple of small size capacitors in parallel with the pull-down resistor with an on-off-on switch to maybe smooth out the square side, just as an option. Is that a bad place to put a cap? I'm thinking that since both sides will be connected to ground (one side through the resistor) it shouldn't add any pops when switching.
Any thoughts?
