Title: the price of good jacks nowadays in the uk?...
Post by: deadastronaut on February 06, 2011, 10:57:30 AM
RANT WARNING

man o man,,,what is it with the price of jack sockets in the uk now?...and they are crappy thin brittle plastic s..t too!...

and the inner sleeve is split , so if you try and tighten them they just shred and pull through and fall to pieces...be- f.....g -ware!...

i bought these (on the right) ages ago, so i cant remember where i bought them...never again :icon_evil:....but when i try to find the jacks i used (neutrik/switchcraft) to use they are like £2-3 each or even more......wtf?... :icon_rolleyes:

also where do we in the uk get the pots with the short solid shaft?...i can only get split shafts..or massive long metal shafts that have to be cut off to size.....hmmmmm...

out of curiosity i tried a small order from pedal parts plus usa value.. $19.00...but they want $34.00 to post it to uk....totally unjustified for the tiny weight?.but great quality....wtf? again... :icon_rolleyes:

arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh................ :icon_evil:

spot the difference..the one on the left is ok...no split in the inner ring...and thick fibreglass rings....great

the one on the right, split inner ring, and thin plasticy crap...also a longer nasty thread...nasty...

if only i could remeber who i got them off of....hmmmmmmmm...i'd slate them big time...rant over!..for now!.. :icon_wink:.... :icon_evil: :icon_evil: :icon_evil:

Yes, those ones are complete shit. I bought a couple just to check them out. Decided not to use them in a build, so I ate them. They were so soft I didn't even lose a filling.

+1 for Musikding from me roo. And much faster shipping than Banzai, ususally about a week for me.

Hi,

Farnell.co.uk have really cheap Neutrik jacks, 84p for 2!!

http://uk.farnell.com/neutrik/nys229/socket-1-4-jack-panel-mono/dp/4632655 (http://uk.farnell.com/neutrik/nys229/socket-1-4-jack-panel-mono/dp/4632655)

Only problem I had was I had to spend above £20 to be able to pay by card. Think its better if you have an account. I just bought loads. Think I got 46 jacks for about £23 including p&p.

Farnell are really cheap for LED's as well if I remember correctly and also Neutrik jack plugs (about 50p if you buy a pack of 5). The only problem is its takes ages to actually find what you want because they have such a huge range of stock.

I ripped apart an old Carvin SX200 that was blown to sh*t and took all the jacks out of it. Think I scored like 10 stereo jacks and something like 13 or 14 50k pots with matching knobs...

Now I just need to find more stuff to tear up for parts...

Oh yeah and a few projects that use 50k pots...  ::)

There's a saying: do you want good or do you want cheap?

There are a LOT of buyers who want "CHEAP!!", and vendors have to stock crap to get sales.

And looking back, have prices actually gone up?

I pulled out my 1981 Newark catalog, and my government's CPI data (http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/surveymost)--

1981:
Switchcraft jack 111 is $0.76
Gasoline/petrol was $1.40/gallon
500KWH electricity $34
Ground beef, pound $1.80
Coffee, pound $2.60

2010
Switchcraft 11 is $1.92
Gasoline $2.80/gallon
500KWH electricity $66
Ground beef, pound $3
Coffee, pound $4

Price rise 1981-2010:
Switchcraft 11 2.5X
Gasoline 2X
500KWH electricity 1.9X
Ground beef 1.7X
Coffee, pound 1.5X

So, yeah: Newark's Switchcraft 11 jack price has gone up 1.4 times faster than burger and brew, at home or go-out.

OTOH, 1970s-1980s Newark moved a LOT of 1/4" jacks, today the absolute and relative volume is much smaller. Fewer small makers, much less DIY (present company excepted), so many new/sexy connectors for new/sexy products. Whereas beef-n-brew and gas and 'lectric demand stays strong.

@ijimi, i do have an account with farnell, there site is very tedious to find stuff..applying 500 filters to find anything... :icon_rolleyes:...but yeah what a bargain!..x2 84p..nice.

i found a lot of what i wanted from them was only in usa and they whack £15.00 on for it...even a chip...lol...

@josh, im picking up an old synth thats totally busted later...i'll rip out what i can too.. :icon_wink:

@paul,great!..ill drink petrol and eat ground beef from now on.... :icon_wink:

yeah i suppose its all relative over time etc....

Hi deadastronaut,

You seem to forget that you are in the country of BULGIN !!! They make quality jack sockets for years - you should know it : VOX, Marshall, HiWatt... These are available at least at RadioSpares, Banzaieffects, Musikding, amongst others.

For the plugs, I use NEUTRIK. Indestructible parts, trust me.

A+!
