Title: Is there any sort of 3080 replacement drop in or otherwise?
Post by: pappasmurfsharem on October 26, 2012, 01:24:47 PM
anything that is functionally comparable to a 3080? I saw something that a 13600/13700 were something like a dual 3094 which is supposed to be similar.

I've got an metal can NTE902 that I want to build a compressor around, ill try to sub it for a 3080 and see what happens.

I'm really wanting to build the Dipthonizer (Madbean's HoneyDripper) but 2 - 3080's @ $4.00 a pop for is a bit on the steep side. If I could wire in a LM13700 I would be a happy camper

You probably know this already, but the CA3080 and the LM3080 are the same thing, just made by different companies.  If you have only been searching for the CA, thinking that was the only 3080, try the LM.

Yeah I know when I I search my usual places I just search for3080 of only tayda had them. And unfortunately multi sourcing gets expensive

Speaking of Harems, Pappa Smurf, I just had a good chuckle.

Google "LM3080" and then check the images.  I would take the "Little Minx" LM3080 any day over a plain old CA3080!   :icon_razz:

I dunno from the look of that face I would probably rather have the IC, probably more expensive though.... Baaaaazing..

but I assume there isn't really a functional replacement then? how will we ever build ross/dynacomps in the future

How will we ever build them?  The same way we always have: exactly as MXR built them.  And if we can't find 3080 chips, Dunlop can't find them.  And if they can't find them in sufficient quantity, they will redesign around a functional replacement like the 13600 or 13700 or a THAT chip.

Logs like the dipthonizer will have To wait then... Can get away with that up front cost Including shipping an enclosure. Got to keep my parts porches on the down low from the lady

ah so it would be compatible? about sound wise? also would One 13700 be equal to 2 3080. For use in a dipthonizer which requires two?

The LM13700 has 2 OTAs and 2 buffers, so yes a single one could be used to replace 2 x CA3080s.  Someone on my blog made up an Emma TransMORGrifier using this daughterboard and it worked fine.

I know this fact has been brought up before on this site but, here goes again.

A company called Rochester Electronics out of Massachusetts makes the CA3080. They have stock sitting!

http://www.rocelec.com/search/finished/ca3080/0/1/contains/

Now what I would do instead of a group buy is contact Tayda to ask them to stock this part. Tayda is very receptive to suggestions. After all, they are a company that wants to make money. They seem to be more quantity of sales (keep prices down, more sales) rather than quality of sales. (High mark ups to make as much money as possible on each sale)

I'm sure by their track record that if they stocked the 3080 it would be reasonably priced.

So....let's get to work and contact Tayda!

There is just something special about you ]v[ark

Many thanks.

I built the pinnacle from one of your layouts and it sounds amazing. Still working  on getting it in to a 125B I've already drilled the holes unfortunately and did apoor wiring job trying to make the knob layout like the original But with top mounted Jacks. It's kind of all over the place :(

Thanks  ;D
Mount the vero upside down, you'll find you get lots more room.  A guy on my blog got a Triple Wreck in a 1590B with 5 pots and a switch by doing that.

These are the Rochester Electronics re-issues. I have sold several hundred with no complaints.

I wonder if Rochester Electronics would consider making through-hole FETs?

They won't consider doing that unless Fairchild stops making JFETs entirely--I asked. Meanwhile, there is No shortage of surface-mount parts, and it would be possible to get those bonded to headers for through-hole mounting in the event that TO-92 became absolutely unobtainium--I also looked into that.

But TO-92 isn't nearly extinct: While I can't speak for my competitors, I have invested a lot in the past six months or so in bulking up stock of popular JFETs and bipolar devices. Not what I would have preferred to be spending money on all at once, but it seemed a survival issue.  The upside is that their is no shortage for hobbyists--at least at Small Bear--though parts are necessarily more expensive.  By next spring, for most types, I hope to be able to accept orders for 100-piece lots.

Korg CMP-1, basically a Dynacomp using a 13600

This is a version of the EH Space Drum using a 13700 instead of a CA 3094, the circuit is poking around somewhere here I'm sure. And what a wonderful envelope generator it is too. :icon_biggrin:

So I put together a Ross comp with a nte902 and there were no problems.
