Somebody mentioned a place to order step bits online that had great prices but I can't remember what thread and was unable to find it by doing a search....does anyone remember? Thanks in advance for any input!

I got a Dewalt at Amazon for ~$5 last year. The same bit is currently unavailable, but here are a couple of others that are inexpensive:

#1
3/16" - 1/2" Titanium M2 Steel HSS Step Drill Bit by Neiko
~$6 incl. shipping to US
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B001CBRK6I/ref=aw_d_ol?qid=1357117383&sr=8-14

#2
3 Titanium HSS M2 Steel Step Drill Bits by CMT
(1) 6 Steps: 3/16" to 1/2", (2) 9 Steps: 1/4" to 3/4", (3) 13 Steps: 1/8" to 1/2"
~$15 incl shipping to US
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B002LGIF7G/ref=aw_d_ol?qid=1357117664&sr=8-11

I'm not sure of the quality, but for the price, it might be worth a shot.

I bought a set of 3 from ebay for 99 Australian cents! Postage brought it to $11 or so though.  They work fine!

The Am-Tech / Silverline ones on eBay for under $5 have done me well for years. I'd recommend a drill press for them though. Not entirely necessary, but being able to accurately control the pressure you're applying helps prevent hitting the surface with the next step when you break through and accidentally reaming the hole.

You can get cheap ones at Princess Auto, i have one theirs, not very good compared to the Unibit and Irwin i have. You can get the good ones at Atlas, next door to The Condom Shack, down on Queen St. W but they are way more money, i got the good ones as Christmas gifts over the years, the cheapy i used my own money.

dave

Princess Auto has decent hand reamers for doing those 'in-between-steps' sizes and a neat little burr removing tool that easily slices off the burr left from drilling.

The ones Small Bear sells are great and a safe bet, even if you have to pay a bit more. They even sent a free small bottle of cutting fluid with my order to use while they were out of stock on the larger bottle.

I bought a pack of 3 step bits from Amazon for about 15$, but they're a bit longer and it's hard to fit enclosures under them in my press.

Looks like ordering is the way to go (as I thought) walked into the local Canadian Tire (that should tell you where I'm at) and saw one for roughly $50...thought maybe the home depot would be a better bet...they also just had one and it was $98!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for rescuing me yet again! or making me lazy enough to ask rather then search on my own. I knew you guys would have the answer!

You must have a Princess Auto nearby. http://www.princessauto.com/pal/product/8256430/Step-Drills/1/8-to-1/2-in.-Titanium-Coated-Step-Drill-Bit

This and a hand reamer will cover your pedal hole needs, plus a 1/16" for pilot holes. I step thru individual 1/16, 3/32, 1/8" bits to ready the holes for the step bit.

I just picked up a set of 3 tonight from Crappy Tire (sorry, Canadian Tire  :) ) tonight for $15 on sale... Check online flyers and see if your local store has them...

Canucker

Don't apologize for calling them CRAPPY tire...cus they are. I could go on a rant about them a week long. But yeah I went and picked up those bits there...they are on sale starting today. Never had a bit like this before so I can't really say if they seem good or bad. I'll have to wait until I borrow my buddies drill press to find out!

The Crappy Tire titanium ones go on sale from time to time, down to $8.99 for the set of three (little pouch included). I bought two sets this summer, and they work just fine for aluminium enclosures. They save me a bunch of time not having to swap bits now.

Just don`t talk about getting your car worked on there though.... I could rag on from now till forever on THAT subject. :icon_evil:

they even admitted to having the worst auto shop. They hired a new head of something early last year (I believe thats when it was) and job one was overhauling the auto shop to redeem they're image...they said this publicly....but nothing was said about how and nothing was ever said about results...just basically we suck and we hope to fix it.
