I built the fetzer valve weeks ago  hoping for good clean sound but it gave me an overdriven tone so I gutted it out. Now, I rebuilt the fetzer valve again searching for a hard overdriven sound but now, it gave off a clean sound even the output pot is at 12:00. Which of those is a good build? Is it supposed to be clean or overdriven?

i think the intended sound is 'very slightly' overdriven when playing hard... but you can always adjust the source resistor lower -less resistance- for more gain.

theres a jfet measuring method that needs to be observed to get the desired sound, so swapping different jfets in the schematic will give different amounts of gain. this is one of those low parts circuits where small deviations can result in large changes... i'd say try some different jfets and adjust the 100k trimmer till you get what your after. or if you'd rather get it 'just right' give the fetzer page a good read and use their calculator/ jfet measuring thing...
but yes, different jfets will sound very different in that circuit, all else being equal.
