Hi,

I have build Rat clone from tonelab and I can't get it to work on my adapter...

When I read power draw, with DMM, of pedal it reads 4.1mA and adapter has 400mA of output (and yes both are 9v and they fit nicely). Also to mentioned that with battery, pedal runs normal, but when I plug adapter just LED and bypass works. When I press switch (3pdt) it lights LED and sound does not comes to amp but when I press it again it just sends clean sound (bypass works)...

Any help...

Wiring. Your power is not making it to the board, most likely. Possibly other issues.

Read and follow "Debugging thread: what to do when it doesn't work".

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

perhaps your circuit is open with adapter power on, check grounding on input socket shield-sleeve. and check dc input socket pinout

As noted, there are a lot of possibilities, with the most likely issue being wiring. The debugging procedure in "what to do when it doesn't work" finds those with much less speculation. In fact, writing that process down was motivated by hundreds of post starting "I built an X, and it doesn't work. What could be wrong?"

Now it is not that is not working...it is no working only with adapter...

With battery it works.

The first thing I would check is that you wired your DC jack properly.  Your problem sounds like you wired the two positive terminals on the jack backwards with the battery and the led connected to the always on terminal, and the power to the board is connected to the terminal that disconnects when you insert a DC plug.  If so, you need to swap the board power and the battery +ve connections to the jack (but leave the led where it is).

Ok, I will try this weekend and will report back. Thanks for hint.

Tried and nothing. I even changed adapter and nothing.

I don't know what is wrong. When I insert battery it works like it should and when I plug in adapter it just cuts sound and nothing comes out. Led is on but no guitar sound. When I press stompswitch it turns led off and guitar sound is clean as it needs to be.

I have switched wires for PCB + and battery + on DC socket and problem is same...can socket be faulty? Would it still transfer power from battery to PCB if it is faulty?

I use this socket: http://www.aliexpress.com/item-img/DC-plug-DC-power-supply-interface-socket-5-5-2-1-MM-metal-DC-021/766812411.html

Typical pedal power supplies are positive barrel and negative pin, which requires an insulated jack like this: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/5x-DC-POWER-PANEL-PCB-2-1mm-Socket-for-Boss-Effect-PJ9A/649869259.html.  You can't easily make it work with your jack (unless you use a plastic pedal enclosure).  What I don't understand now is how you got it to work with the battery.  If you wire up that jack properly and stick it in a metal enclosure, even with battery it would not work.  Although I suppose if you wire it wrong in a particular way it would work with battery.  Refer to this for proper wiring instructions: http://www.tonepad.com/getFileInfo.asp?id=76.

Yes it is in metal case, and works with battery, but I did everything that is said in tonelab offboard wiring...I will check power socket and report back.

Lbzg

No go! It does not work! I have switched to a new socket (plastic one with same layout of pins as it is in tonelab wiring) and nothing! It is same as with metal socket. I did everything as it was described in tonepad rat project and it does not work! Is there someone who have build this project and can help me? Please.

MmmPedals

A picture might help
Does the PS work with other pedals?

Lbzg

Yes, ps is actualy from my other device but it works fine. All aspects are in range: 9vDC, and 400mA of output power. Plug fits fine.

Led light shines normal but annoying is fact that procesed (distorted) sound does not reach amp.

bukas

plug ps into dc socket and read voltages, i see 3 pins so one should be neutral and that one is usually grounded, connect negative pin to neutral and mount on your enclosure. if this doesnt work wire negative pin to same point as battery. in the meanwhile post image xD

Here is picture:

Tell me if you need more info. Also in this photo I'm using this wiring for 3PDT http://www.beavisaudio.com/techpages/StompboxWiring/
I have tried also tonelab's what was my first and main wiring but result is same as with this on.
I'm out of ideas. :-(

As I said, read and follow the advice in "Debugging: what to do when it doesn't work".  http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=29816.0

The whole point of that process is to take the debugging out of the realm of "having ideas" and into something where the measured facts guide you.

I can't tell you how many rambling "what else could it be" threads I read before writing that.

Can you repost pic? Can't see it...

Certainly does seem like either the DC jack is incorrectly wired. What other effect do you power with the adapter?

+1 on this...pg. 2.  The Beavis instructions are cool but the DC jack wiring could be misinterpreted.  I personally like the Tonepad image better.

Found problem!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah! It was ground wire from output ground to input ground! I have solder it to DC socket ground and it works!

Thank you all for help and hints! :-)
