Vox Tone Bender (Which Schematic is Correct?)

Want to build a Vox Tone Bender, but found two schematics that are very different.  Which one is the correct for a 1966/67 period?

This looks like an NPN or a silicon version?

This is PNP.

Does the Vox Tonebender have more gain than the Sola Sound TB MK1.5?

Someone has changed the first schematic to be NPN, pretty sure the original on R.G.s website is PNP. I've got a modern reissue and it's the same as the first schematic but PNP and it doesn't have the 47k in parallel with the volume pot.

Thanks, so the values in R.G's schematic is the same for Germaniums?  On the fuzz face one resistor had a different value for either germaniums and silicon.

If I remember correctly, both are correct. It's been a long time.

There was a PNP and an NPN version. Yes, the PNP version is germanium, the NPN version was silicon. The PNP version was probably earliest.

Since you're into DIY effects and not archeology, why not build one of each and see which one sounds better. After all, we do this for the sound, not for being "correct", right?  :icon_biggrin:

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

LOL!!!  Yes, I have both on the breadboard, the bottom one sounds brighter.  I asked because I never played and heard an actual vox tone bender and wanted to build one and sound as close to the original. :icon_biggrin:
