I built the earthquaker devices hummingbird tremolo using tagboard's vero layout a while ago. When it's on there is a background hum and when it's off the tremolo can be heard.
Is there any general things to look for to fix these issues? Bad layout or bad off board wiring?

Some slight ticking is almost inevitable, "noise" on the other hand is not. I have not built that particulat layout, instead I did my own layout for a Hummingbird/Moosapotamus Skippy hybrid (i.e. The JFET input fom the Hummingbird with Moosapotamus' 2N6027 variant tremelo section). Mine is noise and tick-free in bypass, but when engaged, the ticking can be faintly heard when not playing.

For the noise, I would suggest checking all grounds are connected as per the schem, and also check your switch wiring is good.

For the ticking, after reading RG's posts in this thread:

...I made sure my layout had a separate connection to ground for the LFO cap to discharge so it didn't discharge directly into the ground used by ther audio section. For the IvIark layout, I would suggest removing the Sw2 connection from the common ground used by the audio section (i.e the bottom strip) and try connecting it separately to the input ground.

Thanks Leo. I'll try your suggestion of removing the switch ground connection from the shared ground.
