Built BOSS OD-1 and sounds good but find its a bit muddy with my humbuckers. Mods to try and fix this?

Thanks

Read "The Technology of the Tube Screamer" at geofex.com.

The way to de-muddy a distortion starts with cutting the amount of bass that gets into the distorting section. This can be as simple as making the input cap a smaller value, to taste.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

change the value of the input resistor/capacitor, if there is a resistor in place, remove it and replace it with a capacitor of your liking, .033uf is a great starting point.
Builds:Plexi superlead mkll 100,plexi superlead mkll 50, 59 plexi, 59 4x10 bassman, marshall bass and PA head 100, JTM45, modded JTM45-lead,JCM800 lead 50.

Off to so some reading. Thanks all.

As others suggest, kind of, trace the input line through the bypass/buffer circuit and into the effect - you will come across a capacitor (probably something like a .1uf knowing how Boss try to make over versatile gear, but I haven't looked) that signal runs through into the main effect circuit.

Lower the value as suggested.

That OD is pretty loose at the bottom isn't it? I've not owned one but I seem recall hell when I plugged one into my Laney with the loose arse end on it.

Loose is a great term for it.  I think the cap you are referring too is 47n so I'm gonna switch it to 22n which I guess begins to make it an asymmetric Tube Screamer haha
