Hey y'all, I don't have this problem all of the time. It rarely happens, but every once in a while, I will apply a clear enamel on my painted enclosure.  The clear coat seems to occasionally have a reaction with the paint and it will crackle and some of the paint will lift. Anyone know why this happens? Moisture? Oil from my fingers? It's not specific to the paint because sometimes one type of paint and color will do it and other times it won't. Let me know if anyone has any experience with this. Thanks!

- Different kinds of coating? (synthetic resin or acrylic...)
- paint wasn't totally dry

Using paint and clear coat from the same manufacturer's line will help.

I know that some people swear by Krylon, but I had that happen to me both times I tried to use their clearcoat.  Probably had something to do with my technique, but I never had that problem with Rustoleum.

When using different types of paint it can help when putting on the clear coat buy laying what is called a dust coat, a very fine layer of clear then build it up with more coats. It has to be allowed to dry for a little while between coats so as not to cause a reaction. the crackle is a reaction with one paint layer to the next.
